Generative graphics mobile phone app

#1

This is my first posting, so if I’ve put it in the wrong place or done something stupid, please be kind, lol.

Well… this is something kind of different, but I hope it’s not entirely inappropriate for this site. As part of my interest in art I was curious at what could be achieved by combining simple repeating waveforms. After a bit of experimentation proved that there was some mileage in the concept, I wrote an app for Android mobile phones called Sources. (There’s a Lite and a Pro - all images are from Pro. https://play.google.com/store/search?q=fordartworks)

So - the idea is to allow you to take “sources” - radial, linear, sweep and texture - modify them - wavelength, colours etc - and allow them to interact in a number of ways - additive, targeted, etc. Since the sources are er… sources of repeating waveforms there is the concept of time in the system - the images can be played forward and backward in time (each source propagating at a different speed if desired) and see how the interactions develop. There is, thus, no “drawing”, manipulation of pixels or 3D modelling. Any 3D-like appearance which is seen is purely as a result of the sources interacting. Images can be produced at “any” size due to the object based nature of the underlying definition - but most mobile phones’ RAM sizes limit this to 2000 pixels on a side at the moment. (Tiling and external stitching together is trivial.)

So there you have it - a computer graphics program which runs on fairly modest phones, which is generative in its approach and requires a much more play/explore -type approach than most such programs.

Now - a few images (all created with 5 or fewer sources):

Something a bit cleaner:

Something more purely graphic:

There are a few more examples (and larger sizes) in my portfolio. More information about the app (and examples of some of my traditional media artwork) can be seen on my web site http://www.fordartworks.co.uk

Thanks for reading. I hope my “something a bit different” was not too off topic.
