CG is among the most demanding of computing tasks. As such, you can never have a PC that’s too powerful. When buying or building a new computer, always get the the fastest CPU, the beefiest GPU, the most RAM, and biggest hard drives that your wallet can afford. CG scenes are resource hogs. That’s doubly true whenever simulations such as hair and cloth enter the mix.
I would say that 16GB is bare minimum for complex scenes these days. People can (and do) get by with 8GB-12GB, but they always risk slowdown and swapping to disk. Also keep in mind that, as with any sim, RAM isn’t your only obstacle. CPU speed is important too. You’re going to be dealing with a lot of math behind the scenes.
I don’t know what other people here are using, but here are my general PC specs.
- Intel Core i9-7920X 12-core
- 64GB DDR5 RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080ti FE 11GB
- 500GB 970 EVO m.2 SSD (OS Drive)
- 17GB in 6GB SATA HDDs (Data Storage)
- 32" LG 4K Monitor
Even with this rig, I always feel like I could have something faster or more powerful. Like I said, your PC can never be too beefy. You’re always going to want more as you push the boundaries of your creativity.

8 is a minimum for cg work
16 is ok if you are careful
32 is a nice comfortable amount where you shouldnt have any problems
64 lets you be lazy and leave everything open.

Dynamic (simulated collisions, etc) or just grooming?
64 is what I use for all sims but that is for a pipeline production machine.
I know you asked about hair but FYI for those mentioning 8 Gb as a minimum
I remember Max and FumeFX used to just crash with anything close to a production ready FX if you didn’t have at least 16Gb.
So i would suggest 16 Gb as min for ‘anything Sim’ and the danger is not just slow-but ‘crashing and un-useable’ production situations with not enough RAM…
