gata few questions for ya

#1

1 I am using Maya at this time period; I hear it is the best. However, for the 6.0v it cost over 12k. I don’t have this kind of money at all. Any advise? Or does someone have a earlier version they don’t use anymore or any v that don’t use anymore?

2 I’m interested in making an environment /level much like counter-strike maps. Do I use Maya to create the environment or do I use another program?

3 Is there any books I could buy to help in making levels or shows you how to using Maya preferably if #2 is true. I am currently reading this book “Game Level Design (Game Development Series)”

4 There’s one other problem that I have been bothering me. I can’t draw well. I am not the worst drawler but I could not go pro I can draw like a person but I need to trace some of the body structure first. I am telling you this because I need to use a image plane in Maya to create a model, but I can draw. Any advise? How do you ppl do it?

Thanks for all your help

 1. Maya is not the best. It has ups and downs just like every other 3d app. Plus, Maya is not 12k, look for the basic Maya (i think called Maya complete?). It is like 5k-6k, maybe cheaper.

 2. You use Maya and export to the correct file type (.smd). The source sdk has info on it.

 3. If you already know how to model, just look around for CS map building tips and tutes. If you are a bit new to modeling, I hear the Gnomon dvds are pretty good for Maya.

 4. You can look around for refrences; you can go to 3d.sk; or you can draw out your orthos, get the model’s basic shape, then use refrences to fix the model.

oh, and try posting the text in the default light grey or white; makes it easier on the eyes :P.
