game Editor for artist help please!

#1

hello guys, I am an artist, but I would like to make some of my own pototype game, theres no problem for me to make fancy models, animation and texture, but how could I put things together and run them?

I know only some mel scripting. I am sure it wouldn’t help, what I need is some engine simple–just pototype u know~ and easy for an artist, I can find sufficent material to learn.

it’s not necessary to be free, but not as expensive as unreal!!
I saw the quest3d engine, looks good, and the price is affordable~ but how easy it is? and do u know any published titles made by quest3d? another one seems good is game studio A6, any other suggestions?? some easy to get in tool~~

thank you very much!!!

Hiya.

If you are mainly interested in “prototyping” stuff, you might want to look at http://www.conitec.net/english/gstudio/ . Go for the Commercial version ($200 USD). Current version is 6.31.4, and it is suspected that version 7 will be out within the next 12 months. This engine doesn’t require that you know any real programing skills to get something up and running. If you are primarily interested in making models and importing them into a game engein, and hitting “run” and running it, A6 might fit the bill. The next version (“A7”) will feature a MUCH better import/export capability, better scripting, different methods of rendering, etc. If you want some eye-candy stuff for it you can pick up the “Sphere Engine” for $30, which is an add-on plugin for A6.

The biggest drawback to the artist using A6 is that it’s import/export features can be a bit of a pain to work with (the engine has it’s own world editor, script editor, and model editor; you can import .map into the world editor, and can import various model formats into the model editor…take a look at the demo).

hi pming, thank you very much!
I will check through it!
but if the export/import doesn’t work, then it means nothing to me, I don’t think I can write any sort of plugin for soft!!

anyway~ I d have a look first.
thank you very much!

limited to fps type games, but seems to be very good, don’t be put off by the poor graphical examples, artwork is down to the user…

If you can grasp the language, Blitz3D is an excellent language for simple 3D application. It covers all the basics, has a great community, and can expand into more advanced concepts if you need to. I would suggest having a combination of Milkshape (purely for export options alone) and Character FX (for animation) for it though.

Alternatively, there’s DarkBasic, which I hear is pretty good too. The torque engine? May be outdated for you, but worth a look into. Good luck with your prototyping!

I think you should download Quest3D demo and try it out. If it does not fit your needs, then perhaps try Unity (its Mac only but compiles Windows Exe’s, really cool stuff).

I am working with ShockWave3D and Torque at the moment, but seeing how the programmers struggle to get Torque into doing what they want, i dont want to suggest it. ShockWave3D is outdated graphically but easily scripted for prototyping.

I second PMing’s recommendation of 3D GameStudio. It’s the least programming intensive engine I’ve been able to find. Of course, to get the most out of the software, you will eventually need to learn its scripting language.

Importing Maya models isn’t much of a challenge. You can use the Maya to MDL plugin available on the Conitec site or you can output your meshes in .X format and import them into the 3DGS model editor, MED.

Good luck!

thank all of you very much!
I got some clue already!
all these informations are helpful!!
alos someone suggest me something called virtools, do you know about this?
really want to hear your comments~

Thanks Again…

Virtools is the best technological interactive 3d toolkit available today, but you need a large budget to get it. So if you have financial backing or are rich yourself, it will be a good technology to use.

All you need to do is purchase Unreal…the game…if you are just looking to get models and graphics into an engine then just buy Unreal or Doom3(if you want the latest tech)…you could get either in the bargain bin now I am sure, there are big communities of helpful people out there for both games, you don’t need to license the engines to put your graphics in them they are built specifically for people to do this. The unreal engine has a huge community, heck you could download the Unreal runtime files for free. regardless of the engine you pick you will have to do a bit arsing around to get your stuff into, so picking a popular one is your best bet. Unless you are planning on selling your end product go spend 50 bucks on Unreal 2004 or look around the net for the runtime files.

thanks, unreal seems is unreal for me! as far as I know, a unreal engine is about .75 million dollor!!
I don’t know how much virtools is thou!

thank you for your replay!

Virtools, the “modules” you need to buy for making a game, will set you back about $9000.00 USD. Hope you’re rich!

Unreal Runtime is free for DL…you can’t use it to make “money” with though (re: make a game, use it to show models off to clients specifically so you can sell them, etc.). If you don’t mind spending a few bucks, A6 (3D game Studio, as I said) is still a great buy, and picking up Caligari’s “gameSpace” works very well for importing your models into it, tweaking and UV’ing in it, and export to MDL format…which gameSpace natively supports the A6 engine). Not bad, really.

If you are doing this for totally non-profit, you could pretty much use any current commercial 3d FPS game (half-life 2, DOOM III, Unreal Tournament ???, etc.). shrug At any rate, good luck!

and of course (if you haven’t checked it out so far! ) fpscreator is only £30.

http://www.fpscreator.com

there’s a demo to download and trial it, it’s worth checking out, latest version has a full physics engine and shader support, you can pretty much build and start using straight away.

#15

How much prototyping is possible to do with Unreal or Doom? Arent you stuck with an FPS type game then?

What type of game are you planning to make zinzin?

#16

HI thank you for you guys’ replay!
virtools is pretty expensive as well~ shocked!!

probably check more about these free stuff.
I am not planning fps game, the game I am planning is an advanture game like prince of persia~ it’s more like a rpg mixed with action. I also probably need some physic simulation something like character walking on a tite rope.

I checked the fpscreator thou, it’s constrained to fps, so probably I can’t use it!

thank you very much!
