Ok so here’s my story which is my question inturn. I will be a senior in highschool this coming year, I’ve never had anything other than pretty low grades for the past few years, I’m very smart and get very high scores on the yearly Exams for the state (roughly 80-97 percentile) but I’m lazy and never have been prone to doing homework on a consistant basis… I’m going to work my tail off next year, as it will be my last year…but even if I did amazing, do you think I could get into a good private school, or college focusing on 3D graphic design immediately or would I have to go to a community college first? The school I really want to go to straight out of highschool (which from my understanding doesnt require anything but a good SAT score and a good portfolio) is GNOMON School of 3D in Hollywood, since it focuses on Maya, photoshop, and Blender for an almost 2 year program… any chance you think I have a chance?
Game Colleges without the grades?
Yes. With art schools it’s not really about GPA, although that helps since it helps to show you’re not lazy! Anyhow, you can probably get into a good school if you really ace the portfolio and entrance req’s, like a good “statement of purpose” and art test (if they have one).
I got into RISD with a solid B GPA, a good set of drawings for the art test, and a strong (IMHO) statement of purpose letter. It was an expensive school, but worth every penny, and then some.
Most private art schools are looking at your portfolio and your wallet. If you have both of those stuffed with goodness, then you’ll be fine.
Hiya.
I agree…having good grades is, more or less, irrelivent. I was a student much like you; final grades hovered around the 65% range because I never studdied and handed in only some of the homework.
Then, one day, I decided to go into 3d. So, I spent about 6 months doing a LOT of drawing (always was artistic, but had slacked off on it for a while). Did up a portfolio, sumbitted to three schools (vancouver Film Schood, Full Sail and VanArts)…and was accepted into ALL THREE.
So, IMHO, if you show promiss in art and have the means to pay for a good education…in you go!
I think you will find alot of art students didnt really have great grades in HS. HS is a rather strict course that really is 90% about the ability to do pre-created, repititious tasks with ease and success. Basically breaking you in for an average job. So strictly artist types don’t really do that great alot of the time.
Most colleges and institutes that revolve around art know this, so they don’t really judge by high school grades. Getting into an art school is rather easy to do, I’m sure almost anyone could do it. It’s graduating thats the hard part.
Just realize that later in life you are judged by the quality of the work that you do. If you remain lazy at certain tasks you will be confronted with yourself later on in life. If you want to be succesfull, you’ll have to work hard. Just realize that working for a living is something different than finding your quickest and most easiest way through school, because lateron in life it won’t be that easy.
Of course you have a chance, the deciding factor is what you can produce after you learn those skills to sell yourself. The people at Gnomon may know Maya like the back of their hand but their portfolio artwork looks little better than their student’s.
