Game Art Challenge #10: Jumping Rubber Gun w/ Rider

#1

Hoola!

Here comes my first post on this challenge. I’ve almost finished the modeling of the
two things for my scene, a rider/military dude and the vehicle. As you can see I’ve been inspired by the cute rubber balls from the eighties that you could jump around like a freak on when you where a little boy/girl, and turned it to a heavy armored Jumping Rubber Gun!

Next step is to model a flame thrower for the rider, some UV unwrapping, texturing and probably some cool normal mapping too.

Poly count:
2779 for the dude
1570 for the vehicle
= 4349 in total = 151 polys left for the flamethrower

So, whatcha think about it so far?

Very interesting Character & Machine you have there.

However, I think you could reduce quite alot of polygons without affecting the detail much:
1)The miniguns are taking up way too much polygons IMO.
2)You could probably do without the 4 square holes at the jacket, and use bump map to bump them in.
3)The face has also too much wasted polygons, especially the eyes/eyebrows area and mouth, IMO.

Thanks PKD for your reply.
Yes, I totally agree with you about the poly amount in the face area and so on. I’ll check that out soon, probably when I need some more polys for my flamethrower!
However, the “holes” on the jacket are not holes, it’s pockets, but the view are fooling you a little bit. Sorry about that.

I dont like lowpoly so much, so the modelling critique I am leaving to others, but i think you definetly got the most wierd idea, and I mean that in a good way !

keep going ! =)

Thanks Thell for your comment! It’s fun to hear that you like my twisted concept I came up with, hopefully you’ll like the final result even better, which I guess you’ll see at the end of next week!

BTW, lowpoly modeling is an art in itself, you should give it a try yourself! :wise: +

Hi!

I agree, twisted concept. Anyway, where the “vehicle” lost its ammo for so ammo eater gun like mini gun?? Hmm I’m looking on the model and something missing to me. I don’t know what yet, but I’ll find it.

Till now I’m waiting for the textures.

Best.

Thanks Por@szek for your comment, but I’m not sure about what you meant with the minigun. Anyway, I’ve been optimising the character a little bit, the UV layout are finished, and the texture are about to take form. Unfortunately I am not able to post a WIP until next week, but stay tuned for the final result!

Happy weekend to you all!

Hi!

I’ll try this. You have the minigun. Minigun need an ammo. A lot of ammo. So my question is -> where is this ammo?? I know that my englesh sometimes could be not understandable.

Anyway I hope You understand me now.

Best

Por@szek: Ok, now I understand what you mean. Yes, it’s good point you have there. Well, until now I have just let imagination taking care of that, but we’ll see, there is still some couple of days left before the deadline so maybe I add some more details.

Anyway, here is a little update for you all to enjoy, just the character itself, but as you can see the color map foundation have been set, and I will continue working with it tomorrow. Now it’s time to sleep…

I have posted my final results to this challenge and they can be found here:

HAHA that came out awesome. i LOVE the pink, its a really clever model.
you have to rig and pose the character though. i think it would add soooo much more kick ass-ness to the beauty shot.

#13

I really like the 80s-ballon-ball. To bad you didnt skin your character for the final.

I saw you are a fellow “skåning” and also a 3d-student. Good luck in the contest.

#14

Thank you both for your comments! I’m glad to hear that you like my job on this model.
However, I wanted to rig my character but made my decision to continue doing that later, but I’ll post a update when I’ve made that! - Jao Sizzling, Skåne rulez!
