Game Art Challenge #10 - Glaciercraft for hunting Salador Whales

#1

Hello everyone,

I have been lurking around for the past few years, and figured it would be time to enter
cg talk in a more active manner. I decided to participate in game art challenge #10, and will do so with a post-apocalyptic vehicle built to roam the ice fields of Earth, in search for a rare type of prey called the Salador whale. The vehicle will sport three seats: One for the driver/captain, one for the sidegunner, and last but not least, a seat reserved for the person manning the heavy weight harpoon gun. I began working on sketches and a first polygonal draft last week, and will post these and the rest of my progress in the next couple of days.

I’m hoping to include all three characters, but find the polycount (allthough very generous!) a little daunting. Will do my utmost best.

I’d like to wish everybody the best of luck, and I’m looking forward on seeing everyone’s results! An exciting challenge indeed!

May the best man win

You’ll get a lot more detail out of your 3 characters if you normal map them. I think it’ll be doable. You might want to go about finding ways to hide their lower bodies, too.

To XAQT: Indeed! Nothing like a little sibling rivalry to spark the ol’ motivation

To Ghostscape: Thanks for the tip! I have been fiddling about with normal maps for the last couple of months, but I can’t seem to shake the “plastique”-look (also referred to by some other cgtalkers as “the Doom 3-effect”). I am currently making my way through all the more-then-useful “normal mapping” topics hosted here on cgtalk and some other boards. I have thought of some ways to reduce the polycount by mere design, and I’m going to test them out as soon as I am satisfied with my vehicle. Will post the (crappy) sketch and the first few screendumps later on tonight.
