GAC#11 - Rodney Dangerfield (with golf clubs)

#1

Name: Rodney Dangerfield

Age: 82

Height: 5’ 4"

Weight: 150 kgs (w/o golf bag)

Fighting Style: Dirty!

Weapon: A lovely set of titanium Pings

Backstory: RD passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 following complications from heart valve replacement surgery. After stumbling, befuddled up to the pearly gates, he unwisely cracked to St Peter “nice robe, where’s the toga party?”. Queue trapdoor, and an eternity forced to duke it out with the rest of the world’s wise-guys for the amusement of Lucifer and his be-horned buddies. Imagine Rodney vs The Three Stooges, Bob Hope vs Sammy Davis Jnr, Laurel vs Hardy and Abbot vs Costello.

The game: No Respect!

OK, I’ve made a start at last. I don’t have concept art yet, but I couldn’t help but dive straight into modelling. He’s standing at around 1000 tris so far. The plan is to have him in Y-fronts and a robe, with a golf bag slung across his back. The model so far…

Yeah. He kind of let himself go towards the end. Looking forward to weight-mapping this lot for bounce…

I’m not sure how to handle the robe. I’d like it to swirl around as he jumps, swings etc. Should I connect it to the body mesh, or keep it seperate? I figue his kill move will probably involve swinging the whole bag around, so I’ve modelled his back up to the neck.

Any C+C would be great guys. I’m enjoying this one.

Cheers

 …

#3

lol. I’m not really sure how to take that… Hoping it’s a subtle recognition of an RD signature move…

#4

I think it’s great…
I’d love to play a fighting game with that many wise-cracks…

anyways… keep it up

#5

holycoww74: Thanks for that. Me too. And can you imagine a 3stooges combo attack?

Meantime. Update…

Currently 2.5k tris (my count was out last post). Just been fine tuning and adding fluffy wabbit slippers. This is fun!

cheers

#6

lol, that’s nice… bunnies…

waiting for his head

#7

cheers eMPeck. you might be waiting till after christmas though.

…bah humbug!..

#8

There you go eMPeck. I give you head! er… I mean here’s Rodney’s head! A bit of tweaking to do (need to add some serious assymetry to this guy), but I feel like it’s starting to head in the right direction.

Apart from the fact that he has no ears, any criticism would be great.

BTW: Modelled in Lightwave. 4614 triangles so far.

#9

hehe, nice  He looks a bit surprised  I like Your progress.

#10

Hey. Small update. Still no ears or hands, but we’ll get there. need to do a little research on good hands. Also wonder whether anyone knows about, or knows of tutorials about, rigging fabric. I’m using Lightwave but most of the principals seem to be the same across packages.

5826 tris so far

Any C+C would be really good.

Cheers

and a little more. rodney’s new face (now with ears!). just trying to put a little more weight on those bones, and get a little more recognition happening pre-texture.

cheers

The body is looking good, but the head looks a little different. He looks younger and skinnier than the photos in my opinion. The hair also seems a little too spiky.
Should be an intresting character, but im not familiar with rodney other than the ep of simpsons with mr burns’ son and the cartoon movie ‘rover dangerfield’, so i have no idea about the significance of dressing gowns, rabbit slippers and golf clubs…

Some thoughts,

Body:

  • I think his arms are a tad big. The upper arms especially, which looks to be larger than his thighs. This could just be the perspective. Looking good.

Face:

  • With the large number of tris, maybe adding more loops to emphasis the double eyelids, bags under his eyes, etc will help more with the likeness, unless the plan is to have the textures take care of it.
  • In the last image, it looks like you made the jaw wider, but I think his jaw needs to be wider then his cheekbones. Again, I can’t be sure from the perspective. Might be worthwhile posting front shots, etc.
  • The top of is nose is a tad thin where it meets the brow. Prolly needs to be a tad wider.
  • The tip of his nose could be more bulbous, like in the photo.

I haven’t commented on the asymmetric stuff as you mentioned it would be looked at later.

Hope this helps, and good job in picking a char with a bit more character.
cheers.

That’s what I’ve been working with for a front ortho. Haven’t been able to find a side view, so I’ve been winging it.

Thanks for the crits guys. It’s great to get some feedback.

First up. Andy H:

You’re trying to tell me you’ve never seen Caddyshack! Take a break from modelling your amazing characters, and get yourself a culture injection. Let me set the scene for you. Bill Murray (awesome is the only word) as a greenskeeper, Chevy Chase (in his only movie that’s actually funny) as the retired golf pro, Rodney as an obnoxious newcomer to the country club and a hand puppet gopher. Rodney was one of those old-school Vegas standups “Let me tell ya, I don’t get No Respect. When I was born the doctor said ‘We did everything we could, but he pulled through anyway’. No Respect!” Anyway, I just thought it’d be fun to throw an old guy with manboobs in y-fronts into a fighting game. And I love the idea of taking some seriously offensive heckling into the game too. The slippers and gown are just me trying to make him seem more ridiculous. The gold clubs are Caddyshack all the way. I think he still needs a cigar though.

Agreed on the face. I’m still playing around, trying to age him and give him more weight. The trick is, people who know him, need to recognise him from the early 80s. He really changed in the last decade. So I’m trying to hit the 80s Rodney, fatten him up a bit, and age him with textures. See how we go.

Ok Mr Damage:

  • I think his arms are a tad big. The upper arms especially, which looks to be larger than his thighs. This could just be the perspective. Looking good.

Thanks. Agreed the upper arms are a little, er, large. I guess I wanted to fatten him up, and I like the way some guys get a big gut, manboobs and fat arms while retaining almost effeminately slim legs. Think Tony from the Sopranos. I’ll thin them down a little and see how it looks.

  • With the large number of tris, maybe adding more loops to emphasis the double eyelids, bags under his eyes, etc will help more with the likeness, unless the plan is to have the textures take care of it.

Yep, I’m holding that for texture time. I think we’ll get a lot more recognition after I deal with that end of the process. I’m not really after photoreal here, but i’d like people who know Rodney to pick him.

  • In the last image, it looks like you made the jaw wider, but I think his jaw needs to be wider then his cheekbones. Again, I can’t be sure from the perspective. Might be worthwhile posting front shots, etc.

Yeah, I did widen it out a little. I’m struggling with flabby cheeks and jowls and I’ve got no side ref so it’s tricky. I’ll take a look at that.

  • The top of is nose is a tad thin where it meets the brow. Prolly needs to be a tad wider.
  • The tip of his nose could be more bulbous, like in the photo.

Agreed on both counts. Thanks for pointing it out.

  • I haven’t commented on the asymmetric stuff as you mentioned it would be looked at later.

The plan is to hit that after texturing (unless anyone tells me why I shouldn’t). Lightwave handles geometry changes after texturing really well, and I’d like to mirror the face texture if I can get away with it. It’ll give me more pixels to play with for detail.

Wow. That’s a long reply. Thanks again for the crits. I’ll post again later tonight with an update.

Cheers

Ok MrDamage. Here’s an update with nose and jaw/chin issues advanced (resolved?). I pushed a few vertices around in the cheek/jowl area as well. I think he’s looking a little more rounded now. I’ve also taken a look at the upper arms, and I’ll post a new full body later (hands need work).

cheers

Much better.

Not going for photoreal? Okay, got it. Sorry if I came off harsh. Normally visit the Polycount boards and the crits then tend to be a bit more critical

Googled imaged him and he looks slight different all the time… guess it makes your job much harder.

#17

thanks damage. you didn’t come aff harsh at all. i really appreciate that you took the time to look at my model up close and hit some specifics. your list was really helpful, and it confirmed a lot of stuff i was unsure of.

meantime i know what you mean about him looking different in all the shots. it’s kind of weird isn’t it. guess he must have lived pretty hard.

cheers

#18

hmmm. quiet here today. hangovers in the states i guess.

meantime, here’s his hand so far. if anyone has some tips on good hand geometry i’d love to here 'em right about now. this seems pretty shapeless at the moment…

Forearms are too long, aren’t they…

Try and break my spirit with incisive criticism… please?..

Cheers,

-O

Hmm nice. A little correct, texture … will be good. Form fingers are too long, and ears should be more detailed. They are looking very poor with so detailed rest of character. Other proportions are rather good. Only i dislike the hairs. give them more work. You are on the right way with them so work a bit more on them. Give more details on the forehead, few drills, should be good.
Take care

#20

thanks Por@szek. i’ll take a look at the things you’ve listed later today. i gotta say though, that (for me anyway) ears are the hardest things to model. it’s like a maze in there. i’ll give it another shot.

how’s your van helsing coming along? haven’t seen anything for a while…

cheers
