That’s what I’ve been working with for a front ortho. Haven’t been able to find a side view, so I’ve been winging it.
Thanks for the crits guys. It’s great to get some feedback.
First up. Andy H:
You’re trying to tell me you’ve never seen Caddyshack! Take a break from modelling your amazing characters, and get yourself a culture injection. Let me set the scene for you. Bill Murray (awesome is the only word) as a greenskeeper, Chevy Chase (in his only movie that’s actually funny) as the retired golf pro, Rodney as an obnoxious newcomer to the country club and a hand puppet gopher. Rodney was one of those old-school Vegas standups “Let me tell ya, I don’t get No Respect. When I was born the doctor said ‘We did everything we could, but he pulled through anyway’. No Respect!” Anyway, I just thought it’d be fun to throw an old guy with manboobs in y-fronts into a fighting game. And I love the idea of taking some seriously offensive heckling into the game too. The slippers and gown are just me trying to make him seem more ridiculous. The gold clubs are Caddyshack all the way. I think he still needs a cigar though.
Agreed on the face. I’m still playing around, trying to age him and give him more weight. The trick is, people who know him, need to recognise him from the early 80s. He really changed in the last decade. So I’m trying to hit the 80s Rodney, fatten him up a bit, and age him with textures. See how we go.
Ok Mr Damage:
- I think his arms are a tad big. The upper arms especially, which looks to be larger than his thighs. This could just be the perspective. Looking good.
Thanks. Agreed the upper arms are a little, er, large. I guess I wanted to fatten him up, and I like the way some guys get a big gut, manboobs and fat arms while retaining almost effeminately slim legs. Think Tony from the Sopranos. I’ll thin them down a little and see how it looks.
- With the large number of tris, maybe adding more loops to emphasis the double eyelids, bags under his eyes, etc will help more with the likeness, unless the plan is to have the textures take care of it.
Yep, I’m holding that for texture time. I think we’ll get a lot more recognition after I deal with that end of the process. I’m not really after photoreal here, but i’d like people who know Rodney to pick him.
- In the last image, it looks like you made the jaw wider, but I think his jaw needs to be wider then his cheekbones. Again, I can’t be sure from the perspective. Might be worthwhile posting front shots, etc.
Yeah, I did widen it out a little. I’m struggling with flabby cheeks and jowls and I’ve got no side ref so it’s tricky. I’ll take a look at that.
- The top of is nose is a tad thin where it meets the brow. Prolly needs to be a tad wider.
- The tip of his nose could be more bulbous, like in the photo.
Agreed on both counts. Thanks for pointing it out.
- I haven’t commented on the asymmetric stuff as you mentioned it would be looked at later.
The plan is to hit that after texturing (unless anyone tells me why I shouldn’t). Lightwave handles geometry changes after texturing really well, and I’d like to mirror the face texture if I can get away with it. It’ll give me more pixels to play with for detail.
Wow. That’s a long reply. Thanks again for the crits. I’ll post again later tonight with an update.
Cheers
