GAC#11 - Edward Thatch (a.k.a. Black Beard)

#1

NAME: Edward Teach Thatch, A.K.A. Black Beard
AGE: 330
HAIR: Black
EYES: Red
HEIGHT: 6’4"
WEIGHT: 258 Lbs.
HOMETOWN: Bristol, England
FIGHTER’S SET: Deck of the “Queen Anne’s Revenge”
RIVAL: Lt. Robert Maynard

DESCRIPTION:

Born in 1675 in Bristol, England, Edward Thatch learned weaponry and naval fighting tactics while working as a privateer for the British Navy during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1701. After the end of the war, Thatch turned on his country and began stealing from the crown rather then serving it. Taking up the name Black Beard the pirate, he began his career terrorizing the Spanish Main and the Caribbean Sea. At 6’4" Thatch was an impressive sight; he was as strong and as big as an ox. In battle, he would place matches under his hat, and would briad them into his beard and hair to strike fear into his victims. He also carried several pistols, knives and his cutlass. His brutal tactics and amassed fortune earned him fame across the Caribbean, as did his flagship, the 40-gun warship the “Queen Anne’s Revenge”. However, this fame also earned himself a target from the British Navy, and was eventially hunted down and killed by Lt. Robert Maynard in hand-to-hand combat. Infuriated, Black Beard’s spirit has gone unsatisfied for the past 287 years, and his hatred for Maynard has only grown. Now, there is a chance to satisfy the bloodlust. As the most famous characters of time have been summoned to the arena for the first “Kings of History” fighting tournament, Black Beard is being given a chance for revenge. He will look for Lt. Maynard on the battlefield, and will kill the man who took his life on his way to becoming the best fighter of History.

Nice

I have a similar idea in mind.

#4

Is his hair on fire?..
Cool pic.

#5

Yea, he’s hair’s on fire. Blackbeard uesd to braid matches into his beard and hair to make it seem like his head was on fire when he would raid ships. Prolly not the brightest move, but prolly pretty scary.

#6

i thought he used fuses from dynamite … so it would look like he’s a walking bomb.great drawing dude… keep it up!

#7

levin - fuses…matches…eh, its all good - gets the same effect. heh. =) Thanks for the comment though.

looking cool ehulser. It’s interesting that you are adding a sort of Japanese flare to him, with what looks to be a kodachi and the flag on his back. Was this intentional? Anyways, he’s coming along nicely, although the hat seems a little “yankee doodle” to me. Keep up the good work, fellow pirate maker.

#9

Yea, I wanted to kinda add some more interest to the character design, so I was trying to break away from just a simple pirate design, and most of my interests are heavily Easternly influenced. Yea, I dont really like the hat either, so I’ll work on that. Thanks for the commentary.

#10

I love the flaming beard, if your going to keep it. Great concept art!

#11

Ok, so I’ve changed the design around, still playing with ideas. Still working on the concept art, this one isnt finished yet, but all I’m doing tonight…I wanted a more interesting, darker character then the ones I’ve created so far:

#12

beautiful concept…cant wait to see this one…

#15

#16

Here ya go, latest concept - not particularly happy with the colors…might keep workin on it later…might just start the texture sheets…ill decide tommorow, for now, im beat…so yea…lemme know your opinions.

#17

Hey ehulser, you got one mean looking blackbeard there. Great concept, but maybe the head is a bit too small. Just a thought.
Looking forward to the model.

#18

Oh man, that would’ve been so cool to do! Why didn’t I think of that!

Oh well, I hope you do a great job with him

#19

Man, the concept looks greaat with tthese colors.

I can’t wait to see the model start to shape up.

Thanks for the comments everyone -

Hmura - Yea, I agree that the head is too small…this drawing started off as just a sketch, but I’ve found that when I go from my sketches to my “final drawings” I tend to take a lot of life out of the drawing itself, so this was a new technique I tried for this drawing to just use the sketch itself as the underdrawing…I’ll probably make the head bigger in the actual model.

Hopefully I’ll get to the modeling today, its a half-day at work, so I should have some time to work on it when I get home.
