GAC #11: Admiral Lee Soon Shin (Korea)

#1

I might as well give this a shot. It sounds super fun.

Lee Soon Shin (1545-1598)
a.k.a Yi Soon-shin, Lee Sun Shin, Yi Sun Shin

Admiral Lee Soon-shin is a national hero in Korea. He developed the famous Turtle Boat, which was a first-of-its-kind armored battleship that helped Korea win many sea battles against Japan.

Inspirations:

More reference pictures will be added later.

Character:
I’m going to make a much more updated version of him. The armor less bulky and more stylized. Since he is the creator of the Turtle boat (which is very cool), I’m going to incorporate that theme into his armor and persona. I will also add my initial sketches later.

Stats:
Age: 40
Height: 5’ 11"
Weight: 190 lbs
Fighting Style: Sword and Spear
Special Attack: Turtle Armor Fire Breath (down, down-forward, forward + punch)
Battle Cry: “JOOK JA!” (translation: “Let’s Die!”)

Note:
This will be my first full-fledged 3D model. I’ve digested a lot of tutorials until now. Wish me luck!

Okay, this so far took me forever to make. It’s my first real head modeling. I like to learn things by jumping into the fire. I still have a lot of work to do, but I was wondering if someone can help me with the face topology and tell me if there are any critical mistakes that I’m making. Thanks.

Please keep in mind that this char has asian features (flat rear skull, slightly protruding eye sockets, higher cheekbones, etc.)

So far I would say that this took me about 6 hours. I’m using the spline -> surface method.

#4

Made a bit more progress. I’m definately getting a better hang of the spline -> surface thing.

watching . . .

just one thing? looking at your model so far along with the reference photos?
your model nose has a notch? shouldnt it be straight/flat?
or is your design along with the head protector thingy?

#6

Hmm I’m not exactly sure what you meant, but I wanted his nose to have a bump in the middle. Kinda like he’s played a few games of rugby. There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done, so a lot will be added.

I know it still has that “phantom of the opera - i’m a beginner modeler, look”.

#7

Here’s an update. I’m not really putting that much detail into the ears because his helmet will be covering it.

#8

Haven’t had much time to work on the model, but here’s a quick concept sketch. There’s a “special device” this character will be using that I haven’t shown on the sketch.

#9

I don’t know how the helmet will looks but the head shape isn’t correct. Try use some other blueprints of human head. Anyway good idea of character.

#10

Yeah, some asian heads have this shape (like mine). Sometimes they lack the curvature behind the head. So it does kinda look like his head is pointy on top on purpose.

Hehehe. so next time you see an asian man, go feel the back of his head.
