G-XIII - CG Short Film WIP

#1

What is it?
Let me introduce you to G-XIII. A CG short film that was started for the love of CG film making and is well underway. We have a great crew already but we still have a ton more work to do. The ultimate goal is to get it submitted to film festivals and get some international recognition for our work, which is why we are working on this on our spare time with no budget. As a matter of fact, I have spent quite a bit out of pocket to get this film made (mocap studio, etc), and don’t expect to get any of it back. We just want to make a name for ourselves.

The Film
To protect the story, there’s plenty that I won’t be posting, but I keep a production blog at www.G-XIII.com and will use this thread to post WIPs. I’m hoping that your fresh eyes can provide some insight, advice, help, etc. I’m also hoping to build the fan base a bit.

Please subscribe to the thread, the production blog, and enjoy. Lots of updates and tutorials on the way.

Here is the concept sketch for one of the environments as well as a test render recently done.

#3

why is there a reflection of a racing car on his helmet?

The concept art looks pretty good
Looking forward to seeing a 3-D Version

Thanks for your kind words. The reflection on his helmet is actually caused by the test HDR dome that we are using to test render these models. I can assure you, the final film doesn’t have any race cars in it.

I will post more WIPs in the coming weeks.

#5

Is this going to have a similar style to Halo?

#6

I can see from just looking at the helmet where you would get some similarities to halo, but no. it’s completely different. Not military at all.

#7

Back to the reflection. Highly reflective glass gives the perception that the atmosphere or sunlight is extrememly intense, yet his skin is exposed on the neck and arms. ???
This seems to be a popular tactic. I guess it eliminates the need to model and texture a face.

I always liked seeing the face behind the mask a bit. Reminds me of the Super Metroid shot back in the day of Samus when you could see half of her face.

#8

One of the most important questions a person could ask

What did you use lol?

#9

Actually we didn’t just take the cheap route. lol. There are a few shots that are inside the helmet “Iron man” style, with the floating HUD. Eric is working on finishing up the SSS on the skin shader and I will post some renders of the face.

What do you mean by that? The software that we are using?

#10

Yeah, the OS lol.

#11

Hey guys, this is the render of the head without the helmet. It’s still a WIP but it’s getting there. Eric is going to touch up the neckline of the shirt also (in case someone is wondering about that). I just wanted to share it with you.

Soul, we are all using different Windows platforms. Some of us Windows 7, Vista, even Windowx XP. As far as 3D software, we are all working with Maya 2010 and rendering in mentalRay. I hope this answers your question.

#12

All I wanted to know was the 3D OS that you used. Thats all.

-The modelling was done in Maya?O.o No Zbrush or Mudbox?

Suprisingly well done.

#13

My apologies, we are using Mudbox for modeling the details and painting textures.

#14

I feel like I have to cut information out of you haha

#15

Here is a tutorial I made on how to cleanup motion capture data and retarget it to your character. Make sure you watch this in HD so you can the full effect of the tutorial. I hope you enjoy and maybe learn something. Part II will continue with this shot and get it to a “render ready” status. Stay tuned.

Update!

This is a promo shot rendered of the second environment with one of the robot characters.

#17

Here is the robot character posed. This doesn’t include the wires and other dynamic elements, but it shows all the texture detail so far.
