I am going to do a bike race that takes place in the future.
Good luck to everyone!
That’s cool. I’m glad you’re not going nuts with the modeling/environments. That’s probably good to do most of your previz work with, and then switch out to high-res stuff later, for the actual FX sims. Keep on truckin!
I was just thinking of ways to get the animation simplified, because you have the added challenge of a character in the crash. Maybe he could fall off and the camera follows the bike so you cut down on the total animation time and still have the wholke crash seq left. Just a thought.
I actually have two crashes…
The first happens when a racer pulls up beside another biker and kicks the bike, causing that bike to crash (mostly in the background). This first crash is more of an explosion with fire and smoke.
The second happens when the fat biker looses control of his bike, causing him to do several rolls and the bike takes a flip. It’s not destroyed because he picks up the bike, and takes off when the police show up.
The total duration of the entry will be 1:30 minutes, but I have a short version that reduces it to 55 seconds (in case I run out of time).
Dude, sounds like a lot of work to tackle in a one-month period. I mean, just the raw task of animating all that well, apart from doing the FX work, would take me a month’s worth of free time… then again, I kind of suck at animating, so take that as you will.
My advice is to scale it back a lot and really just focus on one crash, with one bike, and make it look spectacular. Better than having 1:30 minutes of stuff that isn’t quite as spectacular.
I’m begging you do cut that down to 30 seconds. Man, 1:30 even 55, toooooo long, seriously there is NO way you one or even 3 people can get that long to a quality level that you’ll want on your reel, if you can to 20 thats really good and you can add to your reel that is worth so much more than 55 seconds you can’t.
I bet you couldn’t get 20-25 seconds up to a quality level that this forum would be like “no comments, your done!” You KNOW that. 6 weeks, I bet you don’t have a render farm, so thats computer thinking time taken away from the 6 weeks. Please don’t make that mistake.
Ok one last point on that, think of a comercial, think of how many people work on a commercial to get it to that quality, 6 weeks is about right for that. and commercials with teams of 4-15 pros AND a render farm are only 30 seconds!!! No one here is better than a team of pros so we shouldn’t try to do more than they would try to do.
Maybe your right, but I already have a reel and some commercial projects finished that I can use. So this is just for fun. Doesn’t have to be show reel quality, but just be entertaining.

lol! I accept your bet.
I’m just going to have some fun, and not take it to serious.

Render time is always an issue, but I never render at the end. I render by shots, and finish one shot and move on to the next. I also think I’ll be finished before the 6 weeks is up. There is no way I’m going to work on this for 6 weeks. I’ve got other things to do!
P.S. Yes I do have a render farm. It works while I’m at work…

Commercial work is totally different my friend. When you work at a studio with a team your answering to the client who constantly changes their minds, doesn’t like what you do, and 99% of the time asks you to do things that take huge amounts of time.
Most of the work in a commercial spot is spent revising shots, and trying to over come huge technical problems. For example: You may be asked to render a whole city just to show off a new car. Try doing that in 6 weeks…
You can do anything you want in 6 weeks if you have creative control, and you can pick the shots that fit in your time frame.
No one here is better than a team of pros so we shouldn’t try to do more than they would try to do.
Thank you for the advise. I’ll take it to heart, but I wish you had more faith in what I can do
It’s not a matter of having faith, it’s a matter of being realistic and having time to polish. I don’t know what your situation is, how much experience you have with this, or how much time you’ll be able to put into it, but even the most hardened vets I’ve come across in the industry would scale back what you’re trying to do. It’s a LOT of work for a one-man team, and something (possibly multiple things) are bound to suffer in the end product as a result. Please don’t take it as a personal offense; we’re honestly trying to help you.
But please dont be discouraged.
Jason and the others talk from combat earned experience,
and following their advice can only benefit you.

lol!
At least my thread is getting posts!
Guys worry about your own entries, and I wish everyone best of luck.
Then again, I just saw your great reel (LINK), and I have to admit i just ate my shoe.
Good luck.

Well, good luck with your entry. I look forward to seeing what you come up with. The stuff on your reel was pretty impressive, so I’m sure it’ll be something cool.
Thank you!
That’s out dated already. I’ve done 4 television commercials since I cut that reel and I need to update it.
EDIT: Image removed, because I’m changing hosts.
In my race entry it will be the street racing motorcycles against the classic style biker. This is the leader for the classic riders.
The motorcycle needs more detail.
this bike idea is really good When the crash they are F** LOL you should watch some fottage of the Isle of man TT racing,
thats mad 200mph down a little windy road with stone walls each side,
A lot of people push up daisies after that race over the years.
your models look very good!
cant wait to see more!

Some more WIP images. Don’t know if I’ll keep the hair? This guy has to roll off his bike when he drops it, and I’m not sure the dynamics of the hair will look realistic. I’ll have to post some tests renderings.
This guy is finished, and I’m moving on to some other characters. There are a total of 6 bikers. 3 against 3 in the race. I think I will make one of them female.
I love the huge gut. I hope you’re going to apply some soft-body dynamics to this guy.
Look at the flab roll!

This is the WIP of the police car. I’m going to add some lights on top, and a car pushing bumper on the front. Maybe some more decals on the side.
There will be two police officers inside, and I have a shot that zooms up close so you can see them talking on the radio. “We are in chase of street racers!” or something like that.
