FXWars! Flying Car, Leo C, VFX Shot

#1

Im thinking some kind of city flyby/flythrough, maybe a landing shot. i really like the idea of rain especially splashing on a nice shiny car-paint surface.

  • one thing i really love about the blade runner spinner shots is the volumetric lighting - it really gives a good feeling of grime and dust in the air.

hear is a basic concept - not so much a car as a flying van.

based my concept off of this syd mead work - the image is so small i can’t really tell whats going on . . . but i liked that round red shape.

rough model to come next - hopefully basic animation by the end of the week

modeling update:

still going to add a bit of an interior, and additional details on the bottom surfaces. basic materials just to get a nicer feel, the undercarriage hasn’t got shaders yet. pilot model is not by me, donated by my gf. pilot not going to be a focus (you wont see much more than like it is in this shot), but it would look strange if it was flying all by itself.

Hey Chronic

That looks fantastic already. Its funny you mention the rain
Im doing the same hence Im filming on a rainy day.

This is going to be awesome to see two of Syd’s concepts alive again.

Best of luck in finishing your sequence

looking good. the back roof seems a bit smaller, might wanna extend it more based on your concept pic but otherwise keep at it:arteest:

#5

small update - its flying!
still some modeling details to add, and then ill start on the dirt textures.

probably should add some kind of particle effect for the engines -

#6

Looking great.

…but how do you get into it? The back-hatch that you got on your concept-sketch is missing on your model.

Anyways wether you model that or not it’s looking very promissing!

Keep it up!

#7

back hatch? silly things like that don’t matter . . .

but actually I’m going to add that dividing line soon, don’t worry.

#8

working on the comp

lots of things are set to change

#9

some more updates

Quick animation playblast:

work in progress comp test, still working on some lighting issues

#10

very nice!
animation looks good… so many buildings and nice texture on them… i have to do something like that…

this new deadline is great - I have so many passes to render

a small lighting and comp update - tuned down allot of the glows/blurs/glares and the helipad is now properly lit by that spotlight.

this is actualy an old playblast, and its missing all the buildings and stuff - but i was lazy. anyways, i decided to add a character because it helps with the sense of scale - otherwise its hard to tell exactly how big or small this vehicle is, also the cloth motion is nice :}

#13

Thats very nice! But looks more like a ship,I think you should make a scene with the car moving on the ground also.

GOOD JOB!

FINAL ENTRY

HIGH RES H264 (1280x600) 14mb
MED RES H264 (896x420) 10mb

took me about the whole month doing a few hours a day

used maya 2009, photoshop, nuke

everything was rendered in layers, city, helipad, girl, car, all separate. these had passes as necessary, diffuse, spec, etc.

had lots of fun doing this hope you like it
