FXWars! DISINTEGRATION!: Sheepfilms, Laser Attacks!, Mars Attacks!

#1

I’m entering this competition with a hommage to the wonderful Mars Attacks! style of disintigration. I propose a little sequence to build up the effect as the original film did. All right, I won’t quite have the President of the USA, an old folk’s home or some white trash in there, but you get the idea. I’m disintigrating myself

To replicate the effect I'll need:

A laser beam (done in After Effects)
A CG model of myself to emit the fire(Maya for model and particles, will make this myself based on the Maya scene in [this](http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=139&t=452203) thread, thanks [Maxts](http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=31601)!)
A skeleton (Maya again, found one on web)

A test render of the skeleton with a simple HDRI solution(will credit the original skeleton site when I remember the address):

That's it so far. I'll post a rough storyboard and laser test in the next few days

Yay! It’s not just me anymore!

Good luck, it’ll be fun to see this one progress.

I think i’m going to be jumping in soon too…just gotta get a few projects out first.

I’m pleased to say I’ve finished my laser test:

       [Jack in action](http://sheepfilms.co.uk/videos/disintigratetest.mov) (4mb mov) and [wmv](http://sheepfilms.co.uk/videos/disintigratetest.wmv) (3mb)

I was surprised how effective the rotoscoping of the skeleton was, and how well it matched up with my body. Thanks to [zoorender](http://www.zoorender.com/) for the skeleton model

I'll improve the fire effect, and especially it's 3D-ness. I'll make the stand in particle emmiting model visible so there's some depth culling going on, rather than the very flat overlaid feel to the fire at the moment.

I did a little extra sequence at the end with physics, which was a bit of a bodge. I ended up baking it to keys and tweaking it quite heavily to stop the crazy twitching. Just wanted it to have an amusing end to the short

Next step is to storyboard and shoot the little sequence for the final piece

One last note, if you look closely when I drop the laser gun you'll see it breaks when it lands. This film was not without sacrifice *sniff*
(I'll get the super/crazy glue out before the shoot.....)

Haha tha’s really great !! I like it a lot !!
Not sure that the redish skeleton is working… hmm can’t remember Mars Attack well but I didn’t like the way they did to make people vanishing.
Keep it up.

I’m digging it so far. I’ve only done a couple preliminary tests on my own entry, as far as the ashing is concerned but yours are definetly making me want to stop work on my environment and start messing around with the FX.

Keep up the good work…wonder why no one else is entering.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement

Earlier today I storyboarded and shot the rushes for the final short. First the storyboard, apologies for slightly crappy drawings, it was merely for my own reference:

[img]http://sheepfilms.co.uk/disinstoryboard.jpg[/img]

From this I shot the rushes, with the help of my girlfriend for a few of the moving shots:

[Quicktime](http://sheepfilms.co.uk/disintigrationrushesedit.mov) (3mb) or [WMV](http://sheepfilms.co.uk/disintigrationrushesedit.wmv) (2.6mb)

It's a little cryptic at the moment because the laser beam isn't in there yet, and there are other post effects needed in addition to the "money shot", the disintigration. I've also cut shot the end short, to spare you having to endure my "acting"
