FXWars! Collapse: Narrows Bridge 1941

#1

Whew taking a break from Hardcore Modelling Challenge…

I would like to try to resimulate the collapsing of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1941 due to wind frequency.

Here is a very quick test to see if I could even get in the right direction, so I think I know how I am going to solve this one and I will be going for a realistic, but CG rendition.

…and here is the actual footage on YouTube.

Collecting more information.

May also be useful for other structures.

Google Earth Image of the actual bridge which was replaced in 1950, for sense of scale and geography:

Looks like a great start, preparation is very important and as far as i can see you’ve got lots of useful reference material so far, keep at it!

Oh man, I am having two issues:

  1. I have to work out myself, as it is only a decision thing, but I am not sure if I want to use nCloth for the bridge or “shatter” dynamics. Both are giving different results, but are not really realistic.

  2. The splash does anyone have a good tutorial for this large scale kind of splash in maya or after effects. I have done an extensive search in google, but came up near to empty handed. I have to be honest in that there does not seem to be that big of an online community for after effects and tutorials like for 3D - it feels like the after effects gurus want to stay ahead of the rest…but maybe it just be a terminology issue in my searches.

Scene file will be uploaded on the weekend…

Thanks,

Hi Diabolos,
have you tried real flow?
you can get a full trial version i think now from here
http://www.nextlimit.com/realflow/try.htm

cos if you do it in maya you will definitely need to add some particles
ontop of a like a ocean wake effect

thats a pretty big job youve got ahead of ya tho!

hope it goes well

Thanks, I already had my 15 day trial a while back though  and it’s quite pricey IMO. ILM uses Maya particles (at least up til Pirates 2 and 3), so I think I am going to have to keep experimenting and searching. I guess the big time studios do not have time to share workflow and tuts - wouldn’t a Tutorial page at ILM.com be cool…

To create the splash effect you don’t need complicated and slow fluid simulations. You can get the effect with particles. Look at this scene I did a while ago: video
I used simple particle systems with many particles and point rendering. In composition the look can be improved a lot (you can use blurs and merges, color correctors, etc).

Wow Miguel, thats really great. Ok, I’ll make some tests with particles. It’s going to be tough to top that though…

Have a look at X-men3, and if you can, try get the making of for the Golden Gate Bridge sequence. Framestore CFC in london did it.

Thanks Dave, I’ll check for anything on my bonus dvd - then try some googling. Good idea…
