FX Wars! Lighthouse & the Wave!: Evan Schaible

#1

Okay, this is my first FX wars challenge, so I am not up on the process and jargon. Any help as to the way things work, the meaning of different things, and what not would be greatly appreciated.

I will be using some or all of likely RealFlow 4, 3D Studio Max (Krakatoa, PFlow, and maybe Thinking Particle), and the Vue 6 xStream plugin for Max.

I also need the password for the downloaded lighthouse model. I have the file, I just need the password. Thanks.

PS - It is good to see the guys from Fusion CI on here too, I wonder who will win this one.

I am not sure how RF4 will hold up for the deadline with my Quad core, as for good mesh resolution you need a huge scale scene, but I am running basic dynamics tests as I type this. I guess this is my R&D period.

With a small scale scene, RF4 is simulating fairly quickly comparatively. I will post a couple screens of my testing soon.

RF4:

Here are a couple of screens thus far. I am currently unemployed so I have all the time in the world to give to this, and plan on doing that. RF4 is doing okay so far, I am going to test PFlow with Krakatoa as well before I start to actually build the scene. I just want to hone the pipeline as to not get myself in a bind later one. (I will make this a fairly comprehensive WIP thread, I dont now how much detail is necessary).

Stay tuned…

Also, I still need to password for the model. Thanks for that by the way as well, it makes things alot easier for guys like me.

#5

nice start
do you think it better to use waterface in the RF with RW_Splash to make the waves?

#6

I havent done too much testing yet as I dont have the password for the model. But once I get that then I will begin really digging in for the best solution. I dont think I will end up using RF4 that much, but we will see. I have only used realflow on a couple projects, and am looking forward to getting more familiar.

here is the free model of the lighthouse that you can use

#8

Hey thanks. Is that the same model?

  • Evan

#9

I think no! just for test

#10

You need to PM Roberto to get the PW for the model. Be warned it wouldn’t import for me into 3dsmax until I first imported it into Zbrush and then exported from there.

#11

Got it now, thanks guys. I may actually use the one that was given to me in this thread, I like that on a bit better. I really need to learn to model faster, it would take me a week to model a lighthouse.

Okay, here is some progress. I am designing my environment first and then my simulation. Most likely I am going to use the familiar old Krakatoa to make the wave. I am going to stick with my little pistols and see if I can out shoot the cannons on this one.

I used Max to create this render, which took an amazingly long amount of time. I am going to tweak some settings in Mental Ray and see if I cant accelerate the renders a bit. Hope you guys like the progress thus far and stay tuned for my Krakatoa tests.

#13

Here is a screen from Max.

#14

I love it, seems to be going well so far!

#15

Hey thanks. Things are going well enough. I am giving RF4 another chance before I switch over to Krakatoa. Should have a few screens and maybe a render up later.

Stay tuned…

#16

its going cool!

are those afterburn clouds??

#17

Nope, not Afterburn.

#18

Okay, dont laugh at my mesh, it was purely a dynamics test, but I thought I would give it a render. I think I will retire RealFlow for this one and stick to good old PFlow.

#19

I’m recording a training series for FumeFX right now so I am kind of held up with the challenge, I have every intention in finishing though. I really want to give those guys from FusionCI a run for their money, and not even touch a fluid app.

Okay, I still have every intention of finishing this, but i am on a project now. Should be able to get some time in in the next few days… hopefully.
