Finally I got some time to really start reworking the image … here`s an update:

crits please

Hey all,

this is my newest painting.
Maya was used for some forms like the highways … just to have a basis to paint on.

This is the concept sketch :

And here`s the final painting (posted in the 2D gallery aswell … fell free to post feedback there, too) :

Hey man , great work. I really like how you fallowed the concept perfectly. If i had any crits at the moment just like someone said in a post in the gallary. Maybe give the sky a bit more depth.

cheers!

I agree with Matt, looks pretty spectacular. It’s really difficult to pull off a proper scifi cityscape like this one and i think you did it.

My only crits are that some of the clouds, whilst looking great by themselves, don’t quite seem to fit with the rest of the painting right now, maybe follow the way they’re done in your concept a bit more, i think at the moment they’re a tad too strong. Also in my opinion the moon in the sky feels a little too scifi cliche, but thats just my taste.

well done!

great image, I like the concept in general, , although I think the big twin skyscrapers need less deinition and contrast, in this kind of shot, the backlight and the huge scale of it would make it look almost as a shape with no contrast maybe only some light through the windows, sometimes detail is not necessary in order to sell the effect, in this case you want to sell the huge scale and distance between objects ,when you are working with a photoreal exposure this can change
take a look at some references I posted below to see what I mean
maybe more atmosphere and less detail in highlights will improve the image

Thanks for the input guys,

I need to rework some stuff on the highres version anyway, so I`m gonna try out making it more hazy/less detailed as you suggest, James.

Tomas, for the planet I wanted to add spaceships first but then found out that the clouds would easily look like smoke … as if those ships are burning … so I decided to add that planet instead.

Matt, I may have a look on the cloudformations aswell to add more depth.

I agree with the other comments about too much detail. I think you should pull some of the detail out of the shadow areas too. I like the overall atmosphere tho, its lookin really nice.
Id maybe make the clouds a bit more subtle like they were in the sketch and blur them a little too. They draw my attention a bit too much at the mo.

Nice colour pallette.

Oooooh, very pretty  nice lighting/colours. A few perepective issues, and more of a tranditional illustration but nice. I’d remove the balcony, just distracts from the view.

Dave.

Thanks for the comments Nick and Dave.

The balcony is gone now, so the viewer can see more of the city and its scale. With the Hangar pointing towards the point of interest Im trying to achive more depth and tension in the image. This makes a 3d camera move a little easier aswell ;).

please give me some feedback on the idea to take the scene into this direction:
