FumeFX- Ram vs CPU

#1

Hello,
I’m looking to upgrade my computer so I may be able to get better decrease the spacing to get a really good sim.
Currently, on Win XP 32bit with 4gigs ram and a core 2 quad @2.5 i can only have the spacing at .9. anything less, it will crash.

So would upgrading to a 64bit OS(Vista or Win7) and having 8 gigs of ram help? or would i need a beefier processor(s) as well.
Thanks,
Adam

yes, 64bit with 8 gigs and two cpu’s would chew through sims no problem (I have two dual quad core intel 5440s and love them on xp64).

l would stick to Xp64 and wait till windows 7 has been released for 4/5 month then review and up grade depending. don’t wast your time with vista

faster and more CPUs is always a better choice but, new x64 OS gives you better results for sure. If you upgrading anyway I would take 24 GIG from start and dual XEON i7. Mac Pro ?

Thanks for the replies,
Maybe another question would be how low can you set your spacing and how long does it take to do a sim with your settings. If you have a duel quad core on x64 and 8gigs of ram, what spacing setting are you at and how long does it take.
Also has anyone set up a renderfarm for FumeFX?

I always try to begin with 1s/f sim time and work on timing with this, then I increase the values by 10 and work with the fluid movement, on the end you can spend 1 week on looking for the right sim or you’re cheating with shader and comp.

Every shot is going to be completely different. how close the camera is going to get and what your out put size is going to be is going to dictate how much you can get away with in post. you can can have a quick sim that’s fairly low rez and add some glow/blur for a back ground element and look just fine. Siming is a big time spender so you just have to get familar with different shots to see what you can get away with. shaders and the various other setting with greatly improve you sims as well.
