FumeFX net rendering 101

#1

We have purchased the netrender licenses for FumeFX but dont have a clue how to set it up (even though it is supposed to be easy.

We received an email saying to download all the files from the user area, but it wasnt specified which files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

David.

You may be the first!

I assume you are talking about Mental Ray licenses?

AKAIT you install fume on all of you machines, open the material editor, click the get map, tick incompatible (if your not set to MR) select the FumeFX-mr map and Authorize with AfterFLICS, like you would any of the others.

These are render nodes btw so max is installed (for rendering purposes) but not opened.

Are you saying to install Fumefx on each of the nodes and then from my work station open the material editor?

Thanks,
David

the AfterFLICS program generates errors saying it cannot locate the AfterFLICS.ini file.
We searched and there is no such file.

I have to say the AfterFLICS system seems poorly documented (actually it is dumb as hell).
It is implied it should all just work, yet it does not…

We have contacted afterworks tech support for assistance.
Surely we are the dumbest asses on the planet if we can’t get the “simply install the AfterFLICS server” to work.

gah…

#5

It should reside in the default ‘C:\Program Files\AFLICS’

If it is not there, here is the default for it:

[Port]
  5002

  [Servers]
  localhost

  [Guests]
  localhost

  <end>

Make your own and see what happens

It is nearly the same system as the DCPFLICS, maybe those help docs may be a little more clear?

#6

What port number should the AfterFLICS server be set too?

I would assume the same (5002).

Thanks for your help.
David

#7

Or if you are using a specific port for network licensing.

#8

Yeah we are.

I have been able to get the authorization dialog box to connect to the AfterFLICS server (it was a PITA at first).

The Authorization screen says to fill in the details then press the “Send now” button except there is NO SEND NOW button. Alternatively I used the save to file and emailed it. At least that “looks” like it works.

Sure is a good thing I didnt have an emergency project where I needed to get it working ASAP.

The system is is not very intuitive, must not be much demand for it…

Or we are just a bunch of Dumb A$$es…

Yeah the best thing is to send them an e-mail, I have ScatterVL and it uses AfterFLICS, the only way to get it auth’d was by dropping them a line.

Yep, that is always the gamble, always better to try and have something up and running before advertising about it

LOL, doubt it - “hey go read 25 pages of techno-babble”, when it could all be described with 5 pictures and 15 words…
