Fume FX fuel/temperature intensity map

#1

This is the next problem in a scene which I posted about earlier, and I have included quick renders to try to explain what I am trying to do.

I am trying to create fuel/temperature maps for this fire. The object with the grey mat is my source object. The effect I want to achieve with the map is small flames in the ash pile at the base and larger flames on the grey logs. I could achieve this easily with a multi/sub object mat but this won’t go into the fuel/temperature slot. I could also unwrap the object and paint my prefered texture in photoshop but I want noise maps so they can be phased, as there is a posibility this might become an animation.

So to summerise, the brown logs are not part of the fire object, but will have flames licking around them
The grey ash pile will have a mostly dark noise, and the grey logs need a mostly white noise. How can I achieve this?

Have you tried using a mix map with your two noises and a a mask ?

how would this separate out the elements? Do I need some crazy mapping? That is what I am trying at the moment. I used a checker map and added extremely stretched UVWmaps to the elements so the logs are totally covered by a white square, and the ash base is totally covered by a black square, then added the noise maps to the checker. It seems to be working, but it doesn’t seem a very professional solution to the problem.

I would have used a mix with a gradient for the mask to seperate the black zone from the white, but the result is the same. And an unwrap if you want more precision.
