I always learn a lot by searching for “vfx” and “animation” on http://www.search.twitter.com
The chatter is full of useful links and information. Also people always post cool vfx breakdowns and clips. I almost always find at least few great sites to bookmark every time I search.

A while ago I started a podcast dedicated to answering questions from those trying to get into the industry. I’m an environment artist at BioWare, and I interview many other BioWare employees as well as guests from other studios.
The episodes so far:
1 - Audio Design
2 - Tech Art
3 - Gaining Experience
4 - Design 101
5 - Environment Art
Hope everyone finds them useful! We will be having a character art and portfolio episode coming up in the next few weeks.

Another free modeling software: milkshape 3d - http://chumbalum.swissquake.ch/
My first steps were achieved using that. Most importantly, it learned me to think in 3d - it is too primitive to think instead of you. But it can make you loathe everything in 3d, i am afraid.
I made my first steps into 3d modeling using Milkshape 3d. It learnt me thinking 3d - it is too primitive to think istead of you. Can make you loathe everything that smells of 3d. Can import/export every 3d file, used in popular games, other software probably more.
Actually, it’s shareware. After a 30 day trial period has ended you must purchase the software to continue using it. This thread is for software that is completely free to use.
I’m sorry, i didn’t know that. After all, i did use it only for a couple of weeks. It’s a shame, though. Kinda good for first steps. I actualy managed to make a human bodi by placing vertices and conecting them itno polygons.
Hey welcome jimmy.
Yeah Blender is totally amazing, incredible that it is free. You can make anything in it that you can make with the big name apps. Not everybody likes to use it though because it is different to most 3d software.
Have fun here.
Hello
i still don’t really know what i want to build a career in, but i have a blast everytime i make 3D models
