Four horses of the Apocalypse

#1

Introduction:
so a class i am taking has a fairly simple assignment, work on anything all semester long in order to have time to make something worthy of your portfolio. A new criteria of the class though is to post on a thread that is outside of the class to get feedback on the work in progress. The project i am working on is one that i have started in the past but never got around to finishing so the wips are fairly far along modeling wise, but they are going through a redraft so it works out either way. the concept of the works are the four horses of the apocalypse, War, Famine, Death, and Conquest (plague). these models are strictly for renders at the moment so i am not worried about topology for animation or low poly for games. the concepts also focus on the horses themselves and not so much on the riders at the moment.

I will start with the base mesh that i have made the four horses from

War.
the concept for war is that it will be an armored horse made of lava and fire, the legs have been thickened to accommodate the increased weight of the armor and to have more surface area to show off the future lava texture. the armor it has on at the moment is iffy on whether it will stay, i found an image online that made me want to remodel the hind armor and now it does not match the front so it might get redone as well.

This is the texture idea i had for war

and this is the new hind armor that i saw on a model from the game Rift that i liked the concept of so i made my own, please forgive the “fire” effect, i added that in for reference to show that the tail will be made of fire, but since i have no experience in maya fluids is looks silly at the moment

Death
Death is an unread horse, the flesh is falling off exposing the meat and bones underneath, for the most part i am pleased with the model of the base, not so much with the bones at the moment, but as far as the armor goes i am happy.

Famine
Famine is a bit of an issue for me at the moment, i have plans for it but never get around to doing any of them, it is the only horse at the moment that does not have any armor, it only has a base sculpt on it. unfortunately this is the one horse that i am having problems giving its own personality to, most of the ideas i have for it include the rider but none that can stand alone. without the rider i have concepts that would include the armor being more leathery and raged, which fit with the nature of famine, but i was thinking if i ever added a rider i want it to be a fat slob like creature with 4 arms hording all the food and wine and wealth from the peasants, so everything about the rider would be decked out in gold and jewels holding food and everyone around him is starving, including his horse.

Conquest (Plague)
conquest is by far the most technical. i chose to go with a mechanical structure for conquest that will have disease and plague pumped out of its exhaust pipes. the image shown is misleading for where i am in the progress. since i am playing catch up with posting the wips this is a slightly older version. i found the cage housing the armor to be to squared out an ridged (bad for posing) and it hides to much of the gears so i have remodeled it to be more “flowy” and hopefully not hide to much of the insides.

this is where i am at with the new cage and also a slight look at the insides, again, the gears have been changed slightly and i will probibly reduce the amount that is going on so it is not to distracting from the piece as a whole.

still trying to match the front armor to the new hind armor,

the face armor is a bit hard to see but it is there, i am also playing around with a three piece and a nine piece neck armor

i need it to be a 3 or 9 so that i can implement textures that will represent the 9 levels of hell, a 3 piece would let me put 3 on 3, but a nine set would allow each to have their own, the only problem with a 9 piece is that it gives it a very layered look and none of my other armor pieces have this look to it, so i would want to go through and give the chest armor some skinnier sections that layer on top of each other to give it the same feel.

i also removed the ears if favor of some horns, the ones in the previous pics are more placeholder and am working on a design to replace them,

so i have done a slight redesign on war, i was starting to think that having war be 100% lava was to much, so i am adding mesh to be textured as rock to help break things up, this will make most of the armor i have unusable but i will be incorporating some metal armor by bolting plates onto the rock to “hold” it together.

an example of the textures i am going for

its been a while since i have done work on this project, but i have recently picked it back up again. i reworked the base mesh a little, and am starting to redo the textures.

Looks cool. I liked that the eye and facial features were recognizable in the previous version though. Might look cool if you incorporated that into the new version some more.

I really like the bone and skull necklace you did on the Death horse. As far as the legs go, I am with you on the idea of leaving bone exposed, but it seems that the joints are too exposed. Maybe work some flesh back in partially covering the joints, so they are still visible but not fully exposed. My favorite is conquest (plague). I enjoyed checking this out. I’ll check back…
