fluids in maya 2011? buggy

#1

hello all,

first my apologies for posting here. but i dont see forum for fx, fluids, particles, etc. maybe i just missed it and a moderator will move this for me please.

so on to my question. this is a general question, but are many artists out there having a good experience or bad experience with fluids in 2011?

some of my issues, and i have not been able to really pinpoint anything yet

  1. sometimes when i attempt to render fluids in say for instance a 100 frame sequence, it will constantly fail at frame 7 (or some specific frame). if i submit the render to our farm via deadline, it will usually render to the particular frame, such as 7, and then rewind and begin over in some crazy endless loop of doing frames 1-7 without ever moving on. this does not change if i cache the fluids or if i do not.

  2. trying to get some kind of depth pass. for now my process is to a) cache the fluids in fluid state b) convert fluids to polygons c) assign a utility shader that spits out motion vectors and depth. render time is the suck as sequences get longer and fluid is larger

  3. we are doing all of our rendering in mental ray. do mental ray and fluids just not work together well?

  4. i am using a basice fluid setup that i import from a file and then adjust the settings. so why i am asking these questions is sometimes things render perfect and sometimes not, and yet they are all coming from the same setup.

  5. i have been using the auto-resize function on almost all my fluids and now i am thinking this was a big mistake. but to go back to non-auto-resize and get the same exact look can be very time consuming

all in all, i just feel like i am in total render hell right now with fluids. i am new to it so that is a problem too, but if anybody has any ideas or general pointers would really appreciate the help

thanks in advance!
