Flamethrower/Dragon Flames

#1

Hey guys, I’m fairly new to Maya and still learning the ropes, but I was wondering if you guys could help me our with an effect that I need to create for a film I am making. In the film, I have a dragon that breathes fire (as if you weren’t expecting that), and I want to use Maya to create the fire. I want the fire to resemble that of a flame thrower, and I believe that Maya fluids can achieve this effect quite well. However, I am unsure on where to start in creating this effect. Do you guys know of any tutorials or guides that could help me out? The effect that I am shooting for is something like this:

Thanks in advance, and any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated!

I remember this I did it 4 years back …but I am not sure If I still have that scene file with me but may be I can quickly setup something for you in my free time. Now you can do much more with maya fluids in Viewport 2. Maya Fluids runs 3 to 4 times faster in viewport 2 in Maya 2014.
Also if its too complex to learn all the attributes at once then I would suggest you to check out Fume FX in maya too. its super simple & Easy too

Thanks for the quick reply. In response to the comment on Fume FX, yes, Fume FX would be an easier solution, but it is also way too expensive for me to afford on my current budget. If you could quickly setup something for me I would greatly appreciate it. If you are wondering what version of Maya I use its Maya 2013. Does Maya 2013 work as well with fluids in viewport 2 as Maya 2014?

Thanks again for the quick response!

to be honest I havent tried the viewport feature on 2013… not sure if it works in the same way.
But what I can say about 2014 Viewport 2 is it simulates much more faster than in the default viewport. Also one can render pretty fast with Hardware Render 2 :).

I will keep you posted when i find a time to setup something real quick flamethrower for you.

hey Dude,
so I gave it a real quick shot & came up with this setup which might work better if you upres it but with the current resolution you get the idea about its motion. In past I have used Volume axis filed too to give more direction but in this I am just using air field.
if you need to make it more art direct able then I would strongly suggest you to emit it from the particles. in this way you can control the direction & the motion of the flame thrower.
I hope this might give you a little base start to take it further.

hey @viki, when you say emit from particles , that means emit lots of particles to create a line of particles for drive the fluids emittion ???
