Final Render R3 - anyone using it?

#1

This has had somewhat of a silent release. Cebas seem to have done themselves a huge disservice by closing their forums and documentation off to non-customers. IMO VRay’s best marketing, aside from people’s renders, is their forum - even though it’s view-only for non customers.

So is anyone using FR3? How’s the interactive renderer? Is it stable? Have you had experience with VRay and thus can comment on comparisons?

I haven´t had the pleasure to use the newest version… but i do hear its awesome
And btw - they did close the old forums -> but opened a new one on the “new main site” … but yeah - you have to registrer… but its not off limits for non customers
(PS: i, myself like the old forums far better - its sad that they didnt just keep it as the “main forum”)

Got FR3 installed! It has new physical cam which is quite awesome where you can see the small preview that is updated realtime when you change the physical cam setting. Rendering speed improve.
Still playing with it at the moment and here are some samples:

It has a lot of new features, including PyroCluster (ala, Afterburn) and fR Scatter (Vray charges extra for VRay scatter and it’s IR), but the IR is very buggy at the moment…lots of crashes. I was initially able to build a pyroclastic group of clouds and tweak their look with the IPR without any crashing, but at other times I couldn’t get anything going with it.

I don’t think Cebas understands the value of this feature…I think they just threw it in because people like me have been bugging them to death about it over the past few years.
If they thought it was an important feature, they’d have some demo videos and such up on their main page.

Nevertheless, it boasts a very robust OpenEXR and render pass management system. In fact, Autodesk just licensed the OpenEXR implementation in their subscription release. Lots of elements that would formerly have to get it’s own render pass are now additional channels in a single EXR file.

I have had no trouble with the regular renderer, and it does seem a bit faster. It’s just the bugginess of the IPR. Cebas is catching hell over it at the old forums, so hopefully they will get on it and release a Service Pack/ bugfix soon.

Agree on the IPR thing. Other developers (and artists!) oo’d and ahh’d at Fprime when it came out, without fully understanding how insanely practical it was - it wasn’t just a technical marvel.

The whole idea of IPR is to have instant feedback while tweaking elements of the scene. The way that you can just zoom in in fprime is such a time saver in it itself, yet many of the newer IPR technologies focus less on the tweaking and more on the … gimmick?

To put it another way, the ratio of people who used Fprime for tweaking vs. those that took it all the way to final rendering, i’m guessing, would be quite large.

Yeah…I’ve been waiting for an FPrime for Max for years, so I was really looking forward to this feature…especially with the ability to see quick, progressive updates of Volumetric effects in the IPR.
I haven’t really been able to test it much, with all of the crashing it generates. But as far as the rest of the renderer…I’d say it’s worth the upgrade.

It can’t compete Fprime’s IPR thing as shown on their site, I have experienced FR’s …crashed 4 times and haven’t got any interactive result with activeshade  and is someone having same experience like crash of max when see or check the setting of color map in environment dialogue

Well, as far for my experience , having same GI splotches at corners which are usually hit by bounce and need soft edge shadows.
Rest of things I am testing as I get free time. but still no solution, acceptable solution I have found. no crash yet

Hi there,
I´m new to FR, my 1st render of a complete scene… I´m facing this strange blue to black splotches in darker áreas. It just happens when I turn on the color correction from physical camera… all reflections are very blue too…

thanx,
Goulart.

maybe you could lower down the midtones value. at some cases, below than value 1 will make dark spot as what you show.
one more, do you use fr color map at the environment effect? if you use physical cam, FR color map expo always get that kind of artifact. i never use fr color map if im using physical cam.

But it’s also the most fickle-minded renderer. I dunno if it’s just me , but every time it renders a scene, albeit with the same settings as last time , the result is different.

It’s AQMC engine is best for Texture bakes , beauty shots , etc. eg. By dokterr at 2009-01-21[/IMG]

And geolocation based Skylighting !

I use fr toon more for this kind of work …

thanks Harris, It worked, the splotches are gone lol…

BTW I found once a tutorial written by you , bookmarked it, but the link doesnt work anymore, any new links for your tutorial? its really hard to find material to learn final render… thats why vray is so popular, theres information everywhere. I´m really looking to learn it

thanks,
Goulart.

that tutorial is deleted because of copyright issues ( i used Evermotion archinterior scene for the tutorial). btw, that tutorial is meant for FR2. FR3 workflow is quite different. I would be happy to help. Anyway, i can email you the tutorial if you want it. ( harrisnasril(at)gmail.com )
Vray released the free version which FR never released it during the the first competetion between those two renderer years ago. Vray end up with big freelance user based with lots of tutorial and Final render end up for small profesionals in FX industries.
