Feedback on "Shutter Island" inspired matte painting

#1

Hi Talented Friends,

So, I’m trying my hand at matte painting. I put as much as I could into this piece, and when finished, I realized there still things a bit “off” with the painting. I welcome the harshest critiques of this piece and any advice on how to have seem more realistic. The biggest issue that bothers me is that the “island” still seems “2D” even though I added a light wrap. It just doesn’t blend into the image.

Any advice would be very much appreciated!!

Cheers,
Shane

it looks awesome…if you add haze and in-between fog that will give some depth. And far water is crisp…blur it little bit. Darken building shadow part. I think boat light should be from right side…now it looks like from left. Try adding something like tree or branches or any relevant to comp in foreground. Otherwise i like it:-)

Thanks so much Girish.

Yeah, some atmosphere will help a lot! Regarding the shadows, I feel that’s one of my worst flaws in creating matte paintings. I always overlook the light direction with each asset, which easily shows I’m no professional. I’m glad you like it though!

This could become a really nice matte painting but you have a bit of light inconsistency at the moment. The rain on top of your image is also somewhat disconnected. Try taking another stab at the overall lighting and balance your individual elements to one another. For your next version I wouldn’t include the rain. If you want to add a rain effect later, try to layer it in order to give it some depth. And have fun with it.
