Feed back needed! Brands hatch 3d model (Final Yea Uni)

#1

Hello, well, before some of you may have seen I was working on a 3D model of brands hatch for my final year project of uni, sadly I kinda ran out of time to get it exactly how I wanted but its handed in now and here is some development shots I have

and the final project is this!

//youtu.be/eRElkBOHyt4

I have lots of improvements I want to make in the future, but here I’m not going to mention them as I don’t want to influence this, I want to see what everyone has to say.

So, I’m having to do a 10,000 word report on this now, and one chapter is “user testing” it wants proper feedback, and (quoted from the PDF with what we need to do) “Ideally, find CG experts and artists who are familiar with the field and can give valuable feedback. The next best group would be your fellow students who were doing similar 3D project”
So if anyone falls into this, would be helpful if you can fill this in, ill be posting in other places and ill post when I’m done collecting feedback, ill probably leave it a week or so to get as much as I can. but yeah anyone who works in 3D / CGI or has done a project, or even just in uni like me, please look at this, thank you!

Links to CGI/3D Modeling (work, projects, University?):

  1. Is the size and scale of the objects realistic and convincing, are there any bad areas that stand out?

  2. How realistic is the texturing are there any bad areas that stand out?

  3. Is the lighting convincing, does it allow the models to be shown clearly?

  4. Are the cameras paced well and angled well? Is there any you would change or add/remove?

  5. Is it obvious what location the work is based on? Is it close to real life? (as you know it)

  6. Is the sound convincing, does the cheering sound how you expect and does the car sound match what you see?

  7. How would you rate the modeling and texturing as a whole out of 10? (0 bad, 10 excellent)

  8. How would you rate the finished video (everything together) out of 10? (0 bad, 10 excellent)

  9. Anything you would change or want to see improved?

  10. Any other comments?

  1. Is the size and scale of the objects realistic and convincing, are there any bad areas that stand out?
    Seems fine.

  2. How realistic is the texturing are there any bad areas that stand out?
Your ground textures are kinda low res and there isn’t much on them, skid marks, cracks, grass tufts, etc.So streets, grass, and concrete in the seating area, sand.

Garage doors are kinda shiny / low res as are the black areas (doors?). The windows look bumped but you could’ve probably spent the poly’s modeling them.

  1. Is the lighting convincing, does it allow the models to be shown clearly?
The lighting on the podium could be brighter / more dynamic. You could rotate the sun so it’s not entirely in the shadow, or you could add some lights.

  2. Are the cameras paced well and angled well? Is there any you would change or add/remove?
The shots of the buildings move kinda quick. The car driving part seems good. Could add some kicks when the car shifts. Might be cool.

  3. Is it obvious what location the work is based on? Is it close to real life? (as you know it)
I have no idea hah

  4. Is the sound convincing, does the cheering sound how you expect and does the car sound match what you see?
There are no people in the stands so I think that’s an obvious difference. I wasn’t paying attention to the down / up shifting but that seems like a place that should have a lot of attention paid to it.

  5. How would you rate the modeling and texturing as a whole out of 10? (0 bad, 10 excellent)

7ish. Models are good. Trees could be reworked. Overall it’s a bit sparse. Some textures are 9ish, some are 6ish. Fire extinguisher wheels don’t appear to be textured.

  1. How would you rate the finished video (everything together) out of 10? (0 bad, 10 excellent)

  1. Anything you would change or want to see improved?

See above.

  1. Any other comments?

All that said, it was pretty cool. Your still images are really nice.

One of the most iconic racing circuits in motor sport that evokes for the enthusiast a historical charm of yesteryear. When legendary pilots on both two and four wheels diced for the lead going into Paddock Bend after rocketing off the grid. Indeed men like Stirling Moss versus Don Brabham or Mike Hailwood and Barry Sheene knee down at Druids…

Sorry, don’t mind me just indulging in some past nostalgia via archival footage. I’ve been a long time automotive racing fanatic prior too stepping over into the digital spectrum. Without meaning to be boastful at a drop of a hat could rattle off a plethora of boring mind numbing nerdy facts of little interest outside of my peculiar clique of “rabid” petrol heads.

Now with that diatribe in mind and I’m aware this is early days, so accordingly still a ton of work yet left to do, if your focus is a plausible outcome. For example the texturing is 2D non displacement (at this stage), flat default lighting/shadow settings plus inaccurate scaling for a number of static objects ie: bridge, catch fencing/armco railing, also not quite sure about the remainder of the track side structures. Are you modeling with OEM dimensions? or observed estimation via image refs?

But most importantly I have to say there’s a total lack of grime/grit everywhere, which is part and parcel these events generate throughout the course of a particular racing meet. Basically something as simple as tyre marks or “marbles” bits of rubber shed from the tyres…etc will push the realism factor these specific environments inspire.

Additionally as a gamer popular racing games, nowadays practically reference 1:1 their real world counterparts which I think illustrates what is aesthetically possible CG wise, as the following thumbs depict, something to keep in mind.
