February 2015 - Hector Ruiz

Hey guys,

I’m very excited to join this February challenge. Lots of great ideas and works so hopefully I can make it by the due date. This is my first matte painting so I’m definitely in a learning process.

Here is my rough idea. I might play around with some 3D to make it work with some photo bashing. More to come…

Hi,
thats a great looking concept. But you have only a few days too finsih it. How will you do that?

#3

Putting in the hours to catch up and finish…

Here is a block mesh I’m working with to help me visualize the terrain. Still have to work on it a bit more before going to mode with painting and working with photographs.

#4

I decided to explore my environment a little more to see if it would work. I might change a few things here and there to make it work.

#5

Here is my piece a little more developed. It’s still early stages so there is much to be done.

#6

A few more changes to it.

#7

Here are a few more changes. I wasn’t happy with the foreground and needed something more interesting to play with when I add the atmosphere. I also changed the sky a bit rather than keeping it with too many stars.

#8

I’m stuck for now creating the base. Just need some sleep to go back with fresh eyes. After placing the base I will put the finishing touches.

#9

So here is a bit more update on my environment. I decided to deviate a bit from my original concept. Earlier I thought to place the base as a mega building that rose on top of the canyon.

I decided to change it to really show the vast crevice. So huge in size that even a mega base didn’t tower it. I’m still keeping the rule of thirds in place where the base is located and will place with the focus with lighting.

#10

A little more progress…

I think this will be it for my final piece. There were a few things I still had issues with, but it is a learning experience for the next matte painting challenge. Good luck everyone.

I really liked the idea of this image - it wasn’t the most outlandish or epic concept we saw this month, but it looked like it was heading towards a believable, readable matte painting.

It never quite got there, however - so I did a quick paintover to see if I could push it a bit further.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

-Push the moon / sky details back into haze, so the sky doesn’t look so flat
-Bring up the exposure of the image overall
-Resolve some of the unrealistic colour variation in the rocks
-Add more directional lighting to draw the eye to the landing area, as well as give the foreground rocks some form (I was a bit heavy handed here, but I hope you get the idea)

Hope that helps - would love to see this polished a bit more

Hi Alex,

Sorry for the late reply as I went out on vacations and just recently returned. I wanted to thank you so much for your input on the work. I started to change some things and hopefully will have something to show by this weekend. Hopefully you can take a look at it again and let me know what you think.
