face rigging with advanced skeleton

#1

I was just wondering if anyone has used advanced skeleton to build a face, and if so how to get the eye controls to get setup properly, they don’t seem to rotate down the way I’d expect them to. So what I don’t get is:

How do you get the ‘select vert for start of loop’ work?

The string input box next to ‘Next eyelid’, what does that do?

I can see a ‘1’ and an ‘11’ at my eye loops, I think if I can get the ‘11’ to be at the other corner (which I right now can’t figure out) the eyelids might fold properly…?

Thanks for any help!

Did you watch this movie?

Thanks, I hadn’t actually seen that one but unfortunately it still doesn’t work well for me. The problem is my eye here has more geo coming out from the bottom than the top which makes the script pick the wrong corners all the time. What’s the best way around this? I don’t want to change the geo really…

I don’t have Maya in front of me, but one way is to make some temp geo with added/deleted loops, and have it make all the guide joints on that temp. geo, then set the final geo before building.

It does not work for me either.
I watched the vids and tried to set up a face three times and have so far not really gotten it to work. Except for the brows, the primary and secondary controls don’t work properly at all, having only minimal falloff area (mostly just a single vert) and all need further editing, which for some reason takes forever on the conversion process. The eyes close only with one loop. The rest stays put. The mouth control is tiny and rotates the jaw on the wrong axis. The squash control is hidden somewhere inside the geo and can only be accessed via the facial schematic.
Too bad really. This looked very promising for quick but quality setups on jobs that don’t require specialty rigging.

Cheers!

It does work, but it’s not as versatile or refined as the body setup (which has had years of updates and testing in production  ) so some of the setup is a little fragile - You could try posting in the advancedSkeleton facebook page for suggestions perhaps, or even better email Oyvind directly

Thanks for the suggestion, Carlos.

I understand that the facial setup is new in the latest release and would only expect it to need some more work. It’s only natural and not really an issue. You dont look a gift-horse in the mouth, after all. I’m very grateful to begin with that something like this is available at no cost, since I am not really much of a technical person and custom rigs/scripting setups does tend to strain me quite a bit and something like this would be sweet to have for smaller jobs with lesser requirements etc.

I don’t have a Facebook account and don’t intend to sign up, since I prefer to restrict my sparse online activities purely to CG-related sites. Could you refer me to his contact info?

Cheers!

Yeah I haven’t had much luck with the face setup either. Looked so good too. Particularly impressed with the Snook rig.

He is probably the nicest guy in the world  Although very busy lately!
