extrem slow render start (MR) with character sets?

Hi there,

I have a scene with four characters and every character has its own character set.
Today I realized, that Mental Ray (or is it Maya?) takes incredible long to start the renderer.

I did some research: One character alone: 2 min. till MR renders the first frame.
Two Characters: 4+ min.
three: 7+ min.

If I delete the Character Sets: Start in round about 10 seconds…
Can anyone explain me this?
Is it possible to Bake the Trax animations and delete the character Sets?

Maya 2016 Ext.1 sp 4
Also MR up to date
2x intel E5-2650, hyper => 40 Cores

we bake everything into alembic for rendering…

But I really wanna know, if this is a problem only in my setup, or…?
