every Blender user should watch this vid

Hello, this may have been posted here but I thought that these developments in Blender were amazing and should be highlighted for all users and potential users.

Awesome new sculpt mode

Who needs ZBrush or Mudbox now? Blender 2.5 is packed with great features, hats off to the Blender team.

There is a lot of new features/improvements in Blender lately. Many of them thanks to this year’s Google Summer of Code (GSOC).

- Better sculpt brushes (already in 2.53) and new options like gravity brush, 'on surface' brushes and a matcap system on the way:

- Masking for sculpt and vertex paint (with multiple mask layers and mask from images) [(http://vimeo.com/13060555)];

- Vertex paint revamp including overlay image [(http://vimeo.com/13812115)];

- [Ptex](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxNlAlOuQQQ) implementation (nobody saw this one coming!) [(http://vimeo.com/13859283)];

- Bump Map painting [(http://www.vimeo.com/13639081)];

- Painting with particles (not gsoc related) [[news with videos](http://www.blendernation.com/lets-paint/)];

There are other features like Quad Dominant Remeshing (automagick retopo?) in development too, but there is nothing to see yet. Another great GSoC project is the one that covers better mouse/tablet/fancy input devices.

Seriously, it’s Xmas in August and Santa just landed in the roof :beer:

great videos Mordachai.
I just learned about ptex and I was wondering if Blender would get it soon.
Blender is so amazing I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to use it.
I think the development far surpasses any commercial product as far as speed and frequency.

I do enjoy zbrush and I am excited to see what the new ver. 4 is like, but in all honesty zbrush is the tool that forces me to stay on windows and that bothers me.

With the amazing things that Blender is being able to do, I might be able to make the permanent switch to Linux someday.

We sure could use a zsphere/zsketch thing… There was some efforts before, but until now nothing remotely awesome as this features in ZB. [video1] [video2]

But Surface Sketching (a addon, don’t forget to enable in User Preferences) is awesome

“But Surface Sketching (a addon, don’t forget to enable in User Preferences) is awesome ”

wow, I saw that a while back and thought it looked like freakin’ magic but I had no idea it was already being implemented. thanks for the info!!

It really is fun to know that you’ve stumbled into what is “the Next Big Thing” in commercial computer-graphics, and that the users of all “those ‘other’ :stuck_out_tongue: packages” are going to be scrambling to catch-up just as soon as they finally admit that Blender has become something that you actually need to “catch up” to.

Now, we must be gentle with them. Their methods might be a little crude, at first… :rolleyes: After all, it takes them so much “machinery” to do what Blender can do all in one program, all at one sitting. And they have to pay all that extra money to do those “extra” things. (I mean, whoever heard of anyone building a professional-grade package and giving it away for free? :lightbulb Unthinkable!)

Open source software really has “changed the game.”

Another feature from the same dev of bump map painting

 • Multi-Layer Image Painting .

Now imagine this with layer modes (multiply, add, overlay…).

Yea I saw that tutorial a few days ago, the sculpting system in Blender is really awesome now!
The only problem for me is that python doesn’t support multiple cores so I start lagging fairly quick when I sculpt in high subdivisions.

#11

Hmmm - I think there might be something else at play here. I haven’t used the sculpt tools in 2.5x, but I don’t think Python is used much by the sculpting system. I’ve not tried it myself, but according to those who should know, turning VBO’s on in preferences might help if you’ve not already done so?
