Elemental Fairy

This is, obviously, not even close to done yet, but I’m open to suggestions. Specifically, I’m wondering what to do with the background–the white area. I want the image to be sort of “cut out” like a sticker or T-shirt design, but I don’t like it being surrounded by white.

Also, I’m wondering about the bush. My roommate (also an artist) thinks it looks fine. I’m not sure. But I’m not sure how to make it better, either. Any suggestions there would be good.

I’ll have more questions later, I’m sure, but for now I’m working on the grass and the rock.

Good start to the painting. I like the concept and design of the fairy. As for your immediate concerns, I suggest the background should be a light complimentary color. And if you don’t just want to leave it one color, add some darks as to hint that something is in the background. I think the bush looks fine, since its not the focus of your piece, I wouldn’t render it anymore it could take away from the focal point. Hope this helps

I like the Elemental Fairy, you said you didn’t like the white background and wanted the fairy to look like a sticker or a t-shirt, maybe try different colored background and find one that will make the fairy really “pop” out. I know you said it was in no way finished but I think maybe adding some shading, for example, under the wings on the rock.

Alvarolb: About the bush. I’ll keep that in mind. It’s been bothering me enough to consider scrapping the whole thing, but you’re right about it not being the focus. I’ll try ignoring it for the time being.

Dragonsnymph: VERY good point about the shadow under the wings. I almost always forget cast shadows until the last minute…and then I have a lot of repainting to do. >_< Thanks for pointing that out. Now that I look at it, there should be some under her legs, too.

As for the background…I’ll play with the colours some.

Update!

Figured out part of what was bothering be with the bush: a lack of strong shadows and highlights. It could probably still use a few more highlights, but I’m debating what to do with it colour wise, so I’m waiting on that. Now, we have WINGS! cue evil laughter I conquered them (I think). They’re kind of a mix of moth and leaf, to indicate wind. Did some work on the rocks, but they’re driving me nuts, too. I know the sharpness is not what you’d typically find around streams of water, but that particular stream of water is from the faery who is just resting there for a time. It’s usually not there. I think they need more colour variation, too, though. Not liking the placement of the shadow for the wings. Expect it to move.
