Edges are hard upon exporting. Obj Format

#1

I made this lamp in modo (my second try at modo modeling).

I actually have 2 issues.
1, As you can see from the screenshot, the model on the left is the model created in Modo, never exported. The model on the right is the one I exported to import into Wings3D to do a twist. When I imported the model in Wings3D, the model seemed to have the hard edges. I just did a simple OBJ FORMAT Export. Why did it get hard edges upon exporting? How can I export the model so that it has those nice soft edges (the model on the left in the attached pic)?

2, I wanted to export the model so that I can do a twist on the center cage. i tried in Modo, but it came out really bad. I selected the whole model, and Selected Mesh Deform, and did a Twist. Then those small metal bars (the little metal like bars that around the middle of the model) became weird lookin when I tried to twist in Modo. How can I twist them so that it look like those little bars are at an angle? Perhaps I should twist it in Wings3D and take a screenshot of what I am talkin about.

Sorry for the newbie question, but I model usually in Wings3D, and really like Modo and want to learn more and more of it.
Thank You. Have a Great Weekend…

Here, this is the Wings3D Version. I just did a simple twist on the Y Axis.

Same thing I tried in Modo and the center cage started to change shape real badly.

You will have to freeze the mesh if you wish to export the sub division surfaces (tab) model.

just out of interest … how does it look when you do it in
Modo?

Those are not hard edges, what happened is that the model did not substain it’s sub-D, you would need to freeze the model in modo. Than export it. As far as the twisting bars, sounds as if you just need a bit more experience with modo’s work flow, as well as it’s tools.

If we understood what happened and went wrong. How you did it, and saw the edge loops it would be a bit easier to explain how to do that in modo.

Perhaps U are right, I dont know Modo much, so I am tryin to learn it, but I cant seem to get this bend/swirl thing working. Maybe one of you can help me with it.

Here is the model itself. I tried twist, bend, Swirl, just cant figure it out.

If someone can tell me what steps I have to take to get it twisted as shown in that pic from Wings3D, then it would really be appreciate it.

Now going to freeze it and try it again to export it, see if it works.

OK. U guys were right, I didnt know how to do it, lol. Guess practice makes perfection (which I am years away from it, lol).

I see what you did from that explanation in the picture. Gonna try that now and see. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH. I think I didnt have the falloff properly.

But out of curiousity, isnt the Action Center auto by default?

I wonder what I did wrong. Going to try it now.

Thank you again…

Thank You very much. Worked beautifully. The action and falloffs I forgot about them, and thats why it didnt twist properly.

I thank you for the help. Thank You…
