Easiest 3D Format?

#1

Hi,

I am trying to add export support to a 3D viewer application. What is the easiest common 3D Format out there. I only need to export Tris and UV information. No animation, nGons, etc…

Thanks for your help

Use Wavefront’s .obj format or 3dStudio’s .3ds format.

You could check out the .obj and .lwo (lightwave 5) format. They are not that difficult.
There may be other formats that are more appropriate to use.

thanks! i would have looked at these formats anyway, its good to hear that they are quite easy. if somebody knows some links providing documentation or tutorials etc. that would be great!

Use .obj, it’s very easy. You can also easily ignore most of the extra features (grouping, etc.) by just skipping those lines and still get the data you need.

.3ds is a poor suggestion, I think. It’s 100 times more complicated to load than .obj, and dealing with all the material properties and other stuff can be a pain. (and jumping around a binary file with pointers isn’t as easy as just loading ASCII .obj files with fscanf() )

You should consider this one :

It evolves to a real standart format in 3D and is accepted by a wide range of companies. There are also exporter/importers available for max/maya/xsi.
