Dynamic Dice?

#1

Is there a tutorial anywhere dealing with rolling dice? I’m sure I’ve seen one.

I’m trying to get them working with HardFX but the results are really random, either the dice just keep on rollin’, they stop on an edge or they just hit the collision plane and stop dead. The weirdest one was when they would almost stop and then slowly wobble on a bit more.

Heh  That’s LW dynamics allright…

When it keeps on rolling, what about trying to stop it using an extra wind-object.

#3

I will try that. I placed an extra plane to act like a back-board to see what happened and the dice rolled up to it, hit it and rolled back…and kept on rolling! Despite being cubes they’re acting more like little balls.

I wonder whether the slghtly bevelled edges are causing problems?..hmm, I’ll try a simple cube first, I might be moving a bit too fast.

You might concider using Metalink too see if it helps, (making a metacage around the dice)
Also putting on the ‘stop by stabilizer’ or something should help the dice from randomly bouncing…

thanks, I’ll get back on this as soon as I can.

You could use the Realflow demo version for this if you have it.

i will show you a sample later even post the LWo and the LWS…it is 1:40 pm my time
maybe around 7 or 8 tonight…

http://www.kevinmacphail.com/2.html maybe this can help

#9

I have an older version of Realflow somewhere, I think I used it once or twice…never for dice though?

#10

You can do harddynamics using realflow,… but it isn’t that known for its harddynamics,
kevinmacphail’s plugin has better dynamics than LW’s never used that plugin though, but it’s probably worth a shot.

…still, LW’s dynamics should be able to do this,…

#11

You could download the free XSI mod tool, learn to do dice with ease, point oven it back to LW all in a couple of hours.
(Not for commercial use, i should add)

Here’s an example of how Realflow’s RBD look nowadays.

I’m pretty sure it’d cope admirably with some dice. Just ask Next Limit for the newest demo version, download the LW9 plugins and away you go.

I made some dice animations using LW HardFX, and had no problem.

Can you attach the scene, so we can take a look at it?

#14

A quick test using RF 4.3.8.0123 & LW 9.3

A few tweaks to the dynamics needed but it didn't do a bad job in ten minutes. Obviously I've only spent time on the dynamics, not the modelling, but RFs more capable than it used to be.

is this kind of what you are looking for???

i have the ability to show the settings not the band with to upload the vid…
life will suck till i get high speed out in the woods…

i will turn on the links to the files if this is what you are look for

stop by stabilizer or by event?

come on guys, this has been documented 100x in the forums, do a search!

#17

I was sure that this has been documented which is why I asked for links…because I couldn’t find any!

I haven’t had time to check out all the tips and probably won’t for a little while now but I did try a lot of things to stop the dice before posting. The problem wasn’t so much that they didn’t stop, I could do that, I just couldn’t get a convincing motion AND get them to stop…and even more importantly, get them to stop on a flat side rather than on an edge which is just bizarre.

Thanks again for all the help. I’ll either report back with what worked or with a scene for someone to rip apart.
