Latest update:

Hello!

Good luck to everyone!

Race: Demon
Class: Warlord
Artifact Weapon: Darkness/Void

His name is Wilson. He is a demon. He has extra physical and intellectual abilities. He uses magical weapons and armor in combat. His left arm appears to be magical. His right arm is coated in armor. He is wielding a mace (artifact). You feel drawn towards this weapon!

More to come.

Finding some time for this character. I thought I should finalize a concept soon, at least vaguely, hoping he will be realized a little more in 3d.

The design idea hasn’t changed very much. He is still a humanoid with a mace. He has a mask that he sometimes wears, which is a large skull with horns. When he doesn’t wear it on his face, it fits nicely on his otherwise unarmored shoulder. The armor on his other arm might be a type of bone also, but I’m worried he’ll start looking like a bleach character! He’ll have bare feet too, as he’ll be a very fast and dexterous warlord! That is why I added the tie and other floppy cloth bits - so he looks good when zipping around the place. His left arm will still be magical, perhaps possessed or demonic - I was thinking of covering it with runes, but we’ll see how it goes.

I’ve been thinking about some of his abilities, and the abilities of his artifact weapon. His fighting style consist of fast, unorthodox techniques, (similar to one of the main characters from Samurai Champloo), mixed with some spiritual power/magical elements.

His artifact weapon will have at least 3 abilities, which tie in with the Darkness/Void power type. The weapon is basically a black hole on the end of a stick. This portal to the void is the source of the weapons power.

One ability is a pressurized gravity type effect, that occurs when it hits something. The thing that was hit, and anything connected to that thing, will crumble towards the weapon, basically using its own mass against it. Very effective at destroying heavily armored, or large objects.

I’ll cover some other abilities later on.

Here are some more scribbles!

Try something with mutilating his flesh, or messing with his proportions. I love the big big guy, with one shoulder pad. He seems cool… whenever i think of demon, i think of either really big and badass or super super skinny and creepy, so try those 2 extremes. Way to go so far.

Thanks blindsyte, I wanted to steer away from the big guys for some reason. But I found them the easiest thing to scribble out at that stage.

I’ve been staring at this concept for a while, seeing if I like it, and I’ve decided to demonify him a little more. I’ll have to go back to sketches and photoshop, but hopefully the result will be a more interesting one! I’m expecting something that is basically the same design, but a little less human - perhaps more lanky. Should be interesting, because I still want to capture the same kind of look, but with a much longer form. We’ll see how it goes. I’m running out of time!

Here is a scribble of a new direction. I might only have to change a few things to make it work. I still want him to be a barefoot runner though, so I’m going to have to come up with some new feet. I don’t want to go for the goat like legs though; just a regular knee setup. I’ll have to do some new sketches to see if that will work.

Here is an update. The concept and modeling stages have merged - that always happens to me when I am trying to create a concept design!

As you can see I still have a while to go. I’ve stayed pretty close to my previous concept except with the new head. CG Society logo will be on the cylindrical belt buckle. And he’ll have hair, and better armor on the arm. And I still need to design the weapon a little more!

I’m thinking I’ll do some concepts, a little more modeling, then a paintover, then a little more modelling and texturing, and I should be on the good road by then.

Time extension! Hooray for all!

I’m kind of thinking about what kind of armor he should have on his arm. The arm will be entirely kind of bone armor, but I’m still thinking about what it should look like.

:wip: !

I think I might want it to be a really heavy bit, that really weighs him down on one side, just to throw out the symmetry a little, but we’ll see how it goes.

Hmm, to me that sketch head looks cooler than the 3d one! argh! Oh well I shouldn’t make any changes to it for a while until I get some of the other bits happening. I should really start locking things off and texturing them, otherwise I’ll most certainly run out of time.

Heya Robomojo, I’m liking where this is heading. Looking forward to seeing the final result!

P.S Loving the tie

Small update - moving ahead! I wanted to join the uplift competition too, and needed to get it up to speed before I could come back to wilson here!

I adjusted the height slightly, added some hair, and modelled some arm. I’ve made a fun decision about his weapon (gravity mace artifact) - to sheath it, he will ‘insert’ it into his belt buckle there, with some void magic. The belt buckle was previously to have the cgsociety logo on it - it should still work with the weapon hilt sticking out of it. I’ll have to be careful modelling the weapon hilt, so that it doesn’t look too suspicious!

Hey pixelpickle! Thanks I hope it will look OK in 3d… I’m not sure how to get a dynamic fabric look.

#12

I’m starting to optimise while finishing off the rest of the modeling of the character, as I suspected I might be over budget!

head 5092
hair 1520
hands/feet 4156
armor 4346
cloth 1576
weapon 144

TOTAL 16834 !

A tad over the 9000 tri limit, and the weapon model hasn’t even been designed yet. Ouch! I guess I was getting carried away with the design. At least I won’t have any trouble finding bits to optimise!

Oh well, I’ve got some work to do!

#13

Hmm, well the modelling is pretty much finished - I optimised the geometry down to a healthy 8500 or so, leaving some room to play with effects or things. Onto creating a quick texture now. This is quickly becoming a non serious contender, but I will try to finish at least! I just left it too late, and now I’m really pressed for time. Oh wells!

Updatage!

Just bringing him into photoshop when I get chances. The belt buckle is a little experimental at the moment! And the poor old weapon looks pretty ordinary…

#15

Update!

I should be happy if I can get the colour map sorted by the deadline. I might add some little plate snippies on the bone hand as well.

#16

Update!

Spikes?

I think it’s just about done for now. I’d like to revisit it later! I’m happy to have brought it up to this stage at least!

#17

Hmm, no spikes  I think this is finished now. I put an amb occlusion through the diffuse and ambient channels for some cleaner picture. Hopefully I’ll get around to submitting sometime tonight! I’m pretty happy with my last minute effort as it is.

#18

Ok, I’m finished. I won’t be submitting, as I’m missing a few bits and pieces. But I don’t mind!

I’ve learned a lot by lurking here and watching the other entries grow. I like what I’ve got here with Wilson - I think he’s kind of kooky! Anyway, thanks for viewing! Hopefully I’ll be back next year!
