Description:

(Note: I have taken certain creative liberties in the name of backstory. Hope you don’t mind)

Invokers are a rare breed of being. Being able to harness the forces of the universe with sheer will without some other form of focus is no easy feat. It is a talent that seems to be born into certain individuals- if one is not meant to be an invoker, one will never learn. If an individual is gifted however, then the calling is irrepressable and irrefutable. Such beings become invokers without question, powerful magi that have limitless potential on the battlefield.

But some beings are gifted with a deeper tie to the great elemental forces of existence. Some see and feel these energies as if they were an extension of their own bodies. If invokers are rare, then these elemental seers are truly exotic indeed. These beings alone can influence the outcome of the greatest of battles with what seems like little more than a dismissive wave of their hands.

Yet even among these immensely powerful seers, there exists a pinnacle of power. Such creatures are less of their race, and more of the element with which they align. Archons of the utmost force and power, wielding the might of the purest energies. Indeed, many of these creatures forego their mundane senses entirely, relying instead on the deeper, more powerful flows of energy around them to guide their movements instead. Some do so purposefully, others incidentally as a side effect of the coruscating energies they tap into (indeed, it is almost seen as a badge of station among these half-gods). It is not unheard of for a young and growing Archon to melt their own eyes out or worse when wielding such forces as these beings command.

For this great war, I will be focussing on one Archon Invoker (Archmagi if you will) in particular. She is what is known as a Hellion to some. A fire-aligned archmage of devastating potential, exploding with barely contained destructive energy and brimming with the mystically induced emotional force of her element. She has transcended the use and control of mere fire and flame, and can easily tap into the very energy of heat itself. Water boils in her presence, steel wilts, stone melts. She is a being that exists in an entirely elemental state, having long since lost her sense of touch, and even before that had her eyes boiled out of her head. She is the heat of the greatest sun given life, the burn of the fiercest hate and anger given form. Yet she is not a being without intelligence and cunning. Even fire can be silent and shifty. Smoke conceals, conflagrations burn hidden behind walls thought safe.

This day, she has been chosen among the few of the greatest weapons of her people to go forth and bring annihilation to their foes, and victory to a long-beseiged people.
Sustained by the elemental forces coursing through her soul, this being of fire and passion has lived through centuries of warfare, and seen countless thousands of battlefields swept before her. This will be no different.

Given the right to wield a mighty artifact by the great leaders of the CG Society, her originally considerable magical powers were multiplied even further. It touched the fire burning within her soul and brought it forth, turning her into the elemental juggernaut she is now. This artifact is known as the Vestments of the Hellion.

Consisting of two distinct pieces, the Vestments of the Hellion acts as both a magnifier for latent power, and a focusser of the energies brought forth.

The first half, known as the Crown of Cinders, is bonded to the wielder through a lengthy ritual enchantment. It attaches itself to their soul, permanently, and immediately begins to pull forth the latent elemental forces of the individual and magnify them beyond comprehension. In this case, the effect was uniquely destructive and devastating, leading to the deaths of the noble Invokers involved in the ritual.

The second half, called the Sceptre of Ashes, is the focussing component, and will only operate for the one bound to the Crown. Its use, in addition to being a dangerously potent magical weapon when wielded properly, is as a tool of utter finality. It is capable of focussing the wielder’s energies into powerful bolts of heat and flame, and many other flame-related feats, but if the wielder should wish it, combining the Crown’s magnification potential and the Sceptre’s focusing of that magnified energy, she may invoke a blast of incomprehensible destructive force which typically vaporizes anything within miles of the epicenter, and melts flattens and scorches everything miles beyond that. It is a tool of last resort and total annihilation which makes no distinction between friend or foe.

quick early concept painting… Far from finished. The chest pieces and her gauntlet are ancient remnants from when technology existed- what remains of high-tech body armor in the millenium since. They’re almost artifacts in themselves as they are far more durable than any existing material, and completely irreplaceable. It is an honor that she is allowed to wear such hallowed items.

Her magical artifacts- the Vestments of the Hellion, are made to look like a sculpted erupting volcano, though it’s not so easy to see in this image.

More to come.

Side Note- How the hell do I change the thread title?

Wow, very cool back story to your character. I expecially like that you are using pieces of armour from the previous age of technology- ties her into the post-apocalyptic theme.

Awsome sketch so far, can’t wait to see more.

#5

More stuff. Trying to push the sillouhette further- amping out the costume and character.

I have a few ideas rolling around in my head which I hope to boil some brain juice on today. Much inspired by all you talented folks around here.

#6

Trying to figure how her artifact works…magnifying the elemental energy within her soul

Haven’t worked on it itself yet…perhaps next

#7

Hey, more stuff…Imagine that!

Working the concept forward in BW. I like the armor. Needs some detail explorations.

C&C welcome!

Edited…Update a bit

#8

Great concepts and story. I think the latest update is my favorite. I really like how you have incorporated the artifact into her head. Great ideas so far! Keep em comin!

#9

yes the implementation of the artifact is great!
looking forward to this one!, btw, can’t decide if the 70ies:ish trowsers are totally cool or odd!

#10

Id say loose the flares. The headgear is great, I think you might want to try having the hair affected not just the scalp. Keep up the good work

#11

The pants aren’t pants, lol. They’re armor, just unfinished. My fault there.

Having the hair turn into flame as well…I like that idea!

#12

She’s looking super sweet.
Got reservations about the 70s flairs tho  other than that, best concept I’ve seen so far.

Edit- just read it’s unfinished.

#13

FYI- Editted previous post for minor updates…

More stuff. Trying to work up the details in the armor and clothing. Enhance the impact a bit. Got rid of the flared armor legs for knee-high leather boots.

More to follow.

C&C welcome.

I like the miniature sun in the staff; it really gives the artifact a sense of power. The crown’s not bad, either, though the one on the previous picture looked better to me than the one on the last. Complete 4-way symetry seems a bit boring.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I think I’ve successfully gotten the initial iterations out of the way. Now for the real work. I’ve started with tooling around on her gauntlet. I have several ideas. I’m trying for something that says it WAS high tech, but now it’s old. I also want it to say pain and suffering. Take a look.

What do you guys think?

#16

Absolutely amazing concept work. I think one of your sleeker designs will look really good for this character.

#17

Mmm, looking pretty brutal. I like the bottom design on the second arm concept sheet, but the one in the upper left corner of the second would probably work the best with the rest of the design.

#18

I love the head piece and the whole lava/fire feel you gave to the character! Keep it up!

#19

Revising the concept a bit. I’ve decided on a more wrought-iron look for her gear.

Enjoy, thoughts welcome

Back view and color study. I like how this concept is coming out, but I’m still not entirely sure this is what I want for the comp. I need to start modelling soon…

I’m thinking red armor/gear with black leather (CGS’s colors!).
