DWIII - 3D - Bostlund - Bønnen

Hey Everyone,

Firstly, good luck and hope to see some wicked stuff come from all this.

I took some time today to draw up a concept. I'm still unsure where I want to take this character, but I was inspired by looking at Rune Stones and thought it would be interesting to make a Healer of some kind that is made up of these stones and draws his power from them. I wanted him to be kind of small and angelic at first (I'll do another concept for that later this week) but I thought I would start off with a giant and work my way down till I got it right. I suppose Rune Stones would draw from a light/holy artifact; however I’m a little confused how to go about it. I want to make my character be the artifact weapon, drawing his power from himself.

Anyway, here is my first concept let me know what you guys think and any suggestions or critiques would be awesome. Thanks!

     ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok so I’ve done some thinking and have worked out some issues with my idea.

         Here are the Basics:

               Name: Bønnen
     Race: Undead
     Class: Clericon
Artifact: Light / Holy (broken spear)

         The Story:

There is an ancient legend of a battle that took place between a small holy town and a primitive demonic race of unimaginable numbers. The small town stood almost no chance against the vast size of the demonic army. However, with more faith than anyone could ever imagine this town located high above the main land on a mesa overcame the greatest odds. The demon army surrounded the mesa and stretched from horizon to horizon. The town’s people shouted their prayers into the heavens calling upon a great weapon to bring judgment the demons. Without warning the sky ripped open and from it came a small child with nothing more than a spear. As the child came closer to the people he aged and spoke only a few words “My time is Brief my Justice is Swift” and then jumped off the side of the mesa into the sea of demons. The people could only wait while their savior cleansed the land and after 10 days he returned. Not one demon was left alive but for his sacrifice the angel had become a mortal man and aged an entire life. The man walked to the edge of the mesa and with all his strength and remaining life he cast his spear into a pile of stones. The spear stood high above the land and watched over the people as they prospered. A city grew around the mesa and generation after generation people would come and tie prayers to the spear thanking the unnamed soldier.

When the machines came, the people had no warning and no hope. A race of people had been eliminated, their buildings, their culture, their entire existence was no longer

Death could not hold back the sorrow within the unnamed soldier’s heart. Breaking the laws of the heavens the man returned to his spear infusing his soul with the land around it. Feeling each prayer, new and old the soldier grew with power and began resurrecting the land and his fallen people. Fueled by prayers Bønnen set forth on a crusade to rid the universe of all machines and resurrect those fallen by them.

        ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll have the latest stuff posted here, and have one in the thread so people can follow along with comments. Thanks

Very cool idea to make that one as a healer too. I like the concept of something massive and imposing taking that role, but he can still be read as a healer.

#3

Cool concept - seems to be a mixture of elements right now, with fire, earth and water represented, kinda like this creature is a living planet. You mentioned that you want the creature to be his own weapon - make sure to check the rules carefully about this because i think one of the requirements might be a seperate weapon or “artifact”. Also, if you want it to be a healer character I would maybe emphasize the runestone aspect of the character over the elemental aspects - perhaps he’s a healer of planets rather than soldiers? Anyways good start!

#4

Yeah I got a little carried away making the giant, I was thinking of him as a mini planet, holding his molten core. However, I was thinking along the same lines as you with regard to him being a healer of planets rather than soldiers. As for now I’ve pulled away from the elements concept to round out the idea and remove any kind of confusion that may develop with it. I know I want to keep the character as a healer type and I will definitely have to emphasize the Rune Stone aspect like you said. Hopefully I’ll have a sketch or two up soon:)

#5

Yeah, I’ll keep that in mind, it would be pretty cool to keep him as some colossal healer. Kind of like a giant sanctuary that could protect the people near it. Thanks

What is your rationale for the flame element in his hand? Its the only thing that doesn’t seem to belong, despite the “assembled elements” theme he seems to have.
I’m really eager to see action shots of this guy - how he looks casting healing, or trudging across a crowded battlefield. Have you considered whether this will be a unique individual creature or a race ?

Very, very rad story. That back story alone rivals the majority of the designs I’ve seen in this forum.

One question that may be a bit obvious - if it’s a warrior sent to earth, why is the character classed as a clericon? I can see the “heaven sent” (not in the biblical sense) creation of the character lending itself to a healer, but why not just make him a warlord? I mean sure warlord sounds pretty negative but really when they named that class for DW III they just wanted a Warrior class with a fresh coat of paint.

So I assume that the spear is broken for a reason? Like he uses the spear the way the warrior did in life? If it’s like the spirit of the warrior that posseses the stones to create the character, maybe the spirit also possesses the spear, replacing the fractured portion of the spearhead with a kind of ethereal Ghost blade?

I suppose he’s more of a paladin if you look at it that way. However, we are not allowed to combine the classes. I like the idea of a warrior turned healer as kind of a make things right type deal. Though all the creatures he killed were demons of some kind, I feel that after seeing the destruction of the people he saved he would no longer want to destroy.

I will probably strip down some or most of the rocks to make him more ethereal / ghostly and remove any resemblance to a golem. I would still like to tie in some kind of rune / resurrection stone with in him.

The spear is broken because it shattered when he tried to remove it, so some of the spear remains in him, which in a way ties him to his spear. Or if you want to look at it deeper the spearhead remains as an unhealed wound in the stone; his burden for breaking the laws of the heavens and returning to the living world.

#11

Hey Thanks Andy, Yeah I’m going to post my Low Poly model real soon!

#12

Nice concept! Finally I see one of the few holy elements (or have I missed a lot?). Anyway, looking forward to seeing your model.

#13

Thanks Wilzoon,

I’ve been wanting to get this out for a while… Time to take it into zbrush and see what kind of damage I can do.

Here is what I got so far…

#14

Liking the concept.

#15

Almost forgot to post this… Not all my Tris are used yet. But I plan on having all the prayer flags on the spear and draping over Bonnen himself… kind of like a druidic robe… Did some tests earlier ill get them up soon.

Anyway, here’s the stats

#16

Some close ups as requested!

#17

don’t know why, but the thread saved my post twice.

#18

I knew I would like this even more once you started modeling.

Good wook keeping the asymetry of the design. Despite the fact that he’s just big damn rocks and clearly has a lot of mass, he doesn’t look slow or off-balance. That face is good too - managing to to design something so abstract but still communicates emotion is no easy feat, so well done there. That shield/buckler forarm design is pretty slick too. It’d be great to see that end up with a lot of chips and hack-marks in on once taken into Zbrush - you know, show that it’s a defensive thing that’s already seen action. I can see it looking like something carved roughly into shape almost too, like a flint arrowhead or something. Any consideration to make it jagged, or sharpened and weapon-like in itself?

#19

So here is what I’m thinking for the pose. I also was testing out some idea’s with the prayer flags. I want to put more on, but at the same time I dont want to cover him up to much. I’m going to be getting into the texture real quick. Basically just dark/jagged rock with moss kind of scattered around on him. Pedestal is just going to be a basic little ground section. Maybe a small stream running by him. Planning to make the stones look wet like he is in the rain.

Anyway, Here is what I’m looking at for the final pose.

Just wanted to get some feedback on the flag/tattered cloth idea to show the CGS colors. I wrote in my backstory about having the spear wrapped in prayer flags but I found it crowded the character to much to do so. So I decided to do a quick photoshop test to see what anyone could suggest… or if they feel this looks like too much/not enough/good
