DVD's - Please advise...

#1

Hi all - Sorry for asking such an annoying question - I’m just a bit stumped for choice!

Basically - I’ve been using 3dsmax for a long time now but I’ve not used it much over the past 3 years. I’ve never had any formal training in max.

I want to get back into 3dsmax - I’ve got a copy of max8 - and I’m ready to start learning again - but I don’t want to miss anything SO I’ve decided that I will buy some tutorial DVD’s but I’m having a lot of trouble deciding what to buy.

I don’t want to waste money and end up with 6 Dvd’s and a book that I never watch/read - So I’m asking for some advice. I would like to cover everything - I don’t mind going over the basics again if it means I pick up some useful stuff that I never knew before - but basically I’m looking at enviroments / organic & man-made modeling / animation / lighting / effects / texturing etc (the whole works).

I thank you in advance for reading & replying to this thread -

Chris.

Hi,
since you’re new to max,
I preffer you get overall knowlege with Lynda training I think for max 9. but it covers the max fundementals.
max’s tutorials are also the best way to get started.

for modeling go to www.3dbuzz.com and get the max alian modeling videos. You’ve got access to basic max stuff as well. They are free.

for envirenment creations stuff gonomon offers some DVDs but they are bit advance and suitable for intermediate user!.

To learn about Particle Flow effects and texturing stuff www.cg-academy.net/

Good luck.

And again I will HIGHLY recommend going over to 3d-Palace.com and downloading Cris’s Imperial Sentinel FREE video tutorials.

That series alone will warm you up very quickly on modeling. Little tricks here and there…shortcuts to do this and that…trust me…just go download it.

He has several others too…AND he just released DVD number 3 FOR FREE of his Crux set!!

If you wanna spend money…nothing beats the 99 bucks for 3D Buzz’s Mastering max:The Fundamentals DVD set. Over 110 hours of video! I am thinking about getting it myself…but according to EVERY SINGLE person who has bought gives it nothing but praise.

But with all the free stuff at 3dBuzz and 3D palace AND Eric’'s site here…

http://forums.ego-farms.com/index.php

…you will learn TONS.

p.s.
many of the free videos that I have downloaded I have encoded them and burned them to DVD so I can watch them on my TV.

For environment modeling / texturing / lighting / rendering / compositing, those two are really great : http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/tjo01.html and http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/tjo02.html
For organic modeling, they also seems to have some great stuff for max now (gnomon used to be much more maya oriented)
http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/ijo01.html
and
http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/lpi01.html
For everything FX, I’ve heard that the CGAcademy ones would be excellent too
Lol, I realise it’s already a huge amount of stuff, but maybe on the long run

About those 3D BUZZ $99 training DVDs, does anybody know what version of max they use in this material? Max 9 ? Max 8 ? Thanks !

I got a couple of the CG Academy DVD’s, and they are excellent. Even though I’ve been using max for around 10 years I am planning on buying some of their rigging and modeling DVD’s in order to fill holes in my knowledge

I also recommend the Gnomon DVD’s by Ian Joyner. They’re packed with info, and the high tempo suits more intermediate users.
