duplication problems

#1

whenever i duplicate a comp and edit the new copy, it affects the old copy as well. Has anyone had a similar problem and/or knows how to fix this? im using cs4, never had a problem with this in previous versions.

thanks for the help everyone, this has been pissing me off for a while.

Are you sure you’re correctly duplicating in the project window and your duplicated comp does not contain other nested comps that may also be shared by other comps?

yeah the layers within the comps im duplicating are just images/solids/adjustment layers and the like, there arent more comps within it. I’ve also tried duplicating the comps with ctrl+D and edit-duplicate. They both give me the same unwanted effect.

How odd - you might need to trash your preferences or reinstall After Effects - duplicating the comp shouldn’t affect the original. HOWEVER - if you have nested comps within that duplicate anything you do to them will happen to the other comps that have them. So you will need to duplicate everything.

Easiest way to do this without hunting for every single nested comp would be to select the comp in question, reduce project (this deletes everything that isn’t necessary to that comp) save-as a different file name and then open the original file again and import that reduced file into your main project. Voila! - duplicated comp and the nested comps do not reference the comps in your main timeline. I would rename them to avoid confusion later on though.

thanks to the both of you for your input. I’m a little uneasy about uninstalling after effects because i bought it as the production premium adobe suite and im afraid i’d end up making things worse. i think to bypass this i’ll just re-drop any images/solids and copy any and all stlyes/effects needed.

thanks for your help guys, it meant a lot
