Drum Kick Rigging

#1

Hey guys,

First of all, this is a great board and I learned a lot from the threads. Right now, I need some help… I didnt find any related threads.

I want to animate a drum kick pedal. In general very simple I think. But… How do I do this in maya?
I want the pedal to be pressed down, the chain pulled down and the hammer hits the bassdrum. Where must I put the joints? I am quite new in Maya.

Thanks a lot
Hans

Drummer here-

In truth, the rigging of the bass drum pedal is pretty straightforward. You can get away with two joints, that don’t have to be connected. One would go at the pivot of the pedal itself (where the drummer’s heel would go). The other would be where the hammer is pivoting. Then you could either use expressions or set driven key to animate the relative rotations of either one. Rigging the chain is quite a bit more complicated. If you know how the chain works, you’ll understand the mechanics, but putting that in maya is more advanced. The chain works using forces to pull the beater and pedal. Rigging the effects of pushing and pulling in Maya requires either some intermediate math (trigonometry etc) or creativity, or some combination of both.
