Drawing spline using pen without connecting to existing spline

I’m trying to draw a new spline using the spline pen in R21. I have “guide splines” that I have already drawn in the hopes of snapping to them in front view. Even though I have “Create New Splines” ticked under options in the spline pen, the new spline keeps merging with those underlying? Is there a way to change this behavior. It’s quite frustrating to think you can’t trace over existing splines without making a mess. Much Thanks!

You could try to put the guide splines in a seperate layer and lock it.
