Drawing Comic Style

#1

How do you draw comic style? I am learning to draw, and I can draw form with smooth shading, but how do you create form with only black and white?
Moreover, I need help getting started to draw shapes with only lines. I find using indicating form with contours much harder than shading a shape smoothly (for instance, where do I draw a line to indicate wrinkles and drapery?)…

The question is simply, how do you achieve that comics style look?

Some people have it, some don’t.

Get “How To Draw Comics: The Marvel Way.” Study it. The art is old school, but you’ll learn the fundamentals of comic drawing there.

Then study up on pencillers like: Art Adams, John Byrne, George Perez, Rob Liefeld, Travis Charest, Marc Silvestri, and of course Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and Frank Frazetta.

99% of all comic artists start by pretending to be their favorite artists. Try to draw like these people. In a few years you’ll have ‘them’ down pat, and you’ll begin to understand the reason why they draw how they draw. Then you’ll be able to find yourself.

In the meanwhile, if you’re interested in comics find a position in the industry that you can work as. An inker, colorist, letterer, writer, etc. You may find that while you’re a C+ penciller, you may just be an A+ inker. This is the story of many of history’s great inkers. They thought they wanted to be a penciller, but turned out being a remarkable inker instead.

But, there must be a tutorial on how to indicate form using contours or shading using only black.

You learn how to spot black by studying artists who are great at spotting black. I learned to do it by studying Jaime Hernandez, Steve Rude, Adam Hughes, Stuart Immonen, Mike Mignola, Kevin Nowlan…etc.
