downrez fluids ?

#1

Hello cgtalkers.

Do you know of a way of down-rezing (sp?) a simulation ? I have a sim with a resolution of 300 that I’m ok with, but it’s 32GB of cache data and playback is just ridiculously slow. However it has to be matched to a shot, so I’d like to have a stand-in object.

Simulating a smaller resolution works just a tiny bit; however it skips most collisions which I need to know about, in short I’d like a downrez fluid version of the SOuP plug (which is ungodly crash-prone on my beefy work machine  )

I’m thinking taking the average of 222 voxels or 444 should be trivial, and I would end up with near-realtime playback.

Any inputs are welcomed!

If you are on maya 2014 …use the viewport 2 features. It displays & playback fluids sims 3 to 4 times faster ( depending on your graphic card ) than regular default scene preview.
If not 2014 then lowering the resolution manually is the only way out i guess as far as I know :(. Make sure you cache only the required attributes that you need i.e Density & velocity…rest you can turn off if not required.

This where I’d flash a giant “D” in the night sky. Calling superhero Duncan!

Well if I have time I’ll code something with

getFluidAttr

but this is bound to be super slow.

As for the viewport 2 we only have a few 2014 licences and I’m sure it’s a cache not a display bottleneck.
