Does combustion need a workstation card

#1

I am very interested in purchasing Combustion 4.0 and I was wondering if the software requires you have a workstation card. All the autodesk website said was that you need a 32MB video card. Will a GeForce 6800 GT be more than enough. Thankyou.

Another question. How many computers can you install Combustion 4 on with one licence. I know AE can be installed on two with one licence. Thanks

Combustion doesnt require a workstation card, but it would be nice. I run Combustion 3 of 1,98 ghz atholon with an old 32meg card and it runs OK. I dont know about the licences issue.

The question is what’s a workstation? Many are using low-mid end old cards for works that they call professional and call their computers workstations… Dont count on those names.
Try the trial demo of C 4 on your card and see that it works great… well imho.

The big difference with Graphics cards for combustion is what Open GL functions it supports. For example I went from a Geforce FX 5600 128MB $120 (which seemed ok on everything but particles) to the “Low End” of the “Workstation” Cards by Nvidia the Quadro FX 10000 128MB $420 (ebay) and my particles went from crawling to almost realtime. I was blown away. The only real difference in those cards was the Open GL capabilities. Remember that combustion doesn’t need High Poly capabailties. How many polys do you really have in even the most complex 3D composite… Not many. Texture memory and open GL. Discreet has a sort of outdated list of support cards but I suggest getting an older Quadro or Fire GL card for the open gl support rather then buying the latest gaming card expecting great performance boosts.

Beyond that it seems framebuffer hardware and the like is the other way to increase performance and TONS of RAM obiously.

Thats my 2 cents.
