Does anyone know what the sketch tool is used for?

#1

I just tried to use the Sketch button to draw out some lines for the eye region and mouth on a character but it does not do anything else its just lines. Is there a way to turn them into workable polygons??

I am just trying to use it like the topology brush in Silo…but i dont seem to get any polygons out of using it? Am i totally wrong on the idea of this brush/sketch tool?? JUst want to know what is it used for and how u use it efficiently for character modeling. I already looked for it on the Luxology site to see if there is anything on it, but i haven’t found anything…

If any of you ever tried this tool, please let me know how u used it and what it does…

It’s used for creating curves, so you can patch with it…

Thank you for replying so fast, but could u be a bit more specific on how would i do something like that. There is nothing on Luxology that shows how you would patch with it.

Looks really promising to me and i would love to find out how to use it and turn it into patches. Is patching something is just like creating polygons? or you are talking about Nurbs patching like in (Maya) and have to convert that into poly?

Sorry if i sound a bit confused but it would be really helpful if u could assist me with this tool on how to turn something into patches or polygons from the sketches i do.

No worries

there are a couple of ways you can patch curves in modo

  1. Create a curve
  • In Polygon select mode select the curve
  • Select “Patch” and click on the curve
  • You can now extrude the patch as a single curve
  1. Create 3 or 4 curves and join their end verts to one another, creating a loop of curves
  • In Poly select mode select the curve
  • Select “Patch” and change the setting to “Define Patch”
  • Click on the curves in order and you will get a nice curve patch that can be tweaked by changing the patch mode over to “Move Knots”
  1. Totally unsupported  but the bridge tool will sometimes work with curves and sketch curves use it sparingly. And always save before doing it!

For what you’re trying to do however, the “Curve” tool will work better, because of the relation of the background constraint to the geometry that you’re sketching on, whenever it crosses over an edge it may try to jump off of the geometry, of course you can edit the knots in the curve to remove these jumps, but the “Curve” tool with background constraint works nicely.

I appreciate your help and respons to my requests. What i was trying to do is build the eye with the sketch tool and draw a few cross sections over the loops. Is that possible??

I will try your answers first and see where i get. Thanks a lot.
