Do you get "extra" geomerty (flange) using Clip Brush?

Do you sometimes get “extra” geometry or flange when you use the Clip Curve Brush? If you havent, or want to know why and how to solve it- do the following:

  1. Open one of the new Dynamesh Spheres.
  2. Select the “Clip Curve” brush as your selection.
  3. Press CNTL + SHIFT to start cutting off small slices of the sphere with Clip Curve.
  4. Now cut it above the equator.

You will notice extra geometry (or flange) where you made the cut. If you don’t see it keep cutting, you will see it.

This happens because the Clip Curve brush is not doing a boolean, it is flattening to the cut. So, if your shape is bigger than the area left you will get the flange shape. This is a big problem, because the flange will make a mess of your topology, even if you recalculate with dynamesh.

Solution:
Just use the <Alt> key with one of the insert brushes such as insert cube or cylinder to boolean off the part to be cut. Note: I still recommend clip curve, since it is faster to cut stuff off, but use the work-around in the instances where the flange happens.

P.S. Special thanks to Zbrush support, for solving the problem for me.

So the clip brushes are buggy?.

Thanks for the tip Ohmanoggin. I did wonder why the clip curve did that, and I gave up using it.

  1. Dynamesh with groups on
2 brush:>Slice Curve, once done> then ctrl click and drag to remesh it
3 ctrl+shift to select the one you want to keep
    4 geometry >delete hidden

takes about 2 seconds

informerman, I’ve been struggling with doing hard surfacing with zbrush but this should help a lot. Thanks a lot for the info!
