DLPWillyWonka's Sketchbook

#1

Hello! Long time lurker. I was reading the Ranc0r sticky thread and figured I’d like to have my progress as an artist documented for future artists. I started drawing 1 page of sketches a day back in June and feel my artist eye developing. I have a long way to go but I welcome any and all critiques and especially exercises people know of.

#2

Now that the thread has been approved I can post more pictures.

First, a few books that I have used in learning how to draw:
Big Book of Cartooning by Bruce Blitz
Action! Cartooning and Fantasy Cartooning by Ben Caldwell
Andrew Loomis’ books
Cartoon Animation by Preston Blair
Also i have been using the websiteKarma Toons for instruction as well.

Now to the pictures.

#3

Any idea what the limits of embedding pictures in a post are?

#4

Lotsa drawings…

#5

I need to practice more with basic shapes.

#6

Phew! I am completely open to critiques. I know I have alot of problems. I would also like to hear about other people’s warm up exercises. I find myself not getting into the groove of drawing particularly easy.

#7

I have over 100,000 bad drawings inside of me.

#8

Got on a spiderman kick during this time.

#9

I highly recommend the Karma Toons website to anyone just learning to draw.

#10

That’s all the sketch pages for now.

#11

A very sparse page for today’s drawing. I had to do shopping at lunch and didn’t get to sit down as long.

#12

Doing basic shapes for practice.

#13

More cubes, cylinders and a few spheres.

#14

Some action cartooning drawings

Perspective practice. Middle top right is my favorite. Top left would be fine but I lost track of what I was doing when I made the middle 2nd story building. :-/ Was going for a cloudy reflection and ended up with squiggles.

#16

Yet another sketch of perspective. I hat the middle top this time around. The building on the right just lost all sense of direction. :-/

#17

Trouble in that right hand top. I didn’t separate my vanishing points enough. :-/

Welcome here, I’m so glad somebody here is doing perspective studies
I strongly encourage you to keep at it, the fruits will be sweet

I hope you don’t mind if I point out at some little mistakes you did so that you could avoid them in further studies, here they are :

  1. First, I drawed 3 instead of two building on the left side just to show you how strongly they foreshorten with insreasing distance from camera. You can see that the third building (all 3 have the same length) is actually so thin that it’s barely noticable but yet so much increase the sense of depth. All 3 arrows in this image shows various vanishing points to which paralel lines are converging.

  2. Here I showed an easy method to find centre of a rectangle in perspective. Just make diagonals and where they cross is a true center of that object in perspective. I drew the door right in the middle of it for example. Here I also showed few horizontal paralel lines to get a grasp of how draw the tiles on sides of a road.

  3. This is something essential you should realize, that vanishing point are always behing objects, not in front of them. So to make a sense of the image no. 3 you have to consider it as seen from bellow (like if the floor was transparent). I drew a little guy seeing above to a building above him. You could see some crappy clouds receding on horizont

Keep up buddy, looking forward to see more

Wow! Thanks siiilon! I wish I had the time to ask you some questions tonight but I have to be up early tomorrow. I really appreciate the crits and when I get back from PAX 2009 next week I’ll have lots of sketches to upload.

Back from PAX and it was a blast. Here are some pages I did while out there.
