I’m planning a large landscape architecture project and was hoping for some input. There’s going to be a lot of sculpted stone sculptures, fountains, cobblestone, stone walls etc. The client is asking for realistic as possible. I’m torn between high poly proxies or displacements for getting all that detail. VRay and mental ray are the only available renderers. Any suggestions?
Displacement vs Proxies
Mentalray can be quite slow with displacements. Not during rendering, but during preparation of the scene. So here high detailed polys are maybe better.
Hi Chowda
Dunno anything about vray but if you end up using mr I’d suggest to do a simple test with instanced or proxied geometry ( in case your geometry is replicable ) with high polycounts and then corresponding lowres geo & displacement.
Remember to use Displacement Approximation with the displaced geometry and maybe turn of the automatic displacement prep.
I’ve had some quite nice results with just lowres polys, displacement & displacement approximation but there’s lot of variables here which can make a difference so without the scene this is about the info I can come up with just from top of my head.
Good luck.
