Displacement Maps and File Sizes [Mudbox/Maya]

#1

Hey everyone,

I’m having some concerns with transferring displacement maps from Mudbox to Maya, and then rendering in Renderman.

The first problem is I can never get the fidelity of detail from my Mudbox terrain model to my final render. Using 32-bit exr or tif, at 4096x4096 res (for each UV tile), the displacement always looks lumpier/not as sharp as it does it in Mudbox.

On top of that, those 4k exrs can be 150mb a piece! And with a 8-10 UV-tile terrain-plane it’s very taxing on our rendering times, (without all the high-fidelity details I put in the mudbox model!!)

Does anyone have an tips/workarounds for maintaining file sizes and keeping high res detail between Mudbox and Maya?

there is no real workaround… its not uncertain that texture data for a terrain will have several gb of data and hundreds of uv tiles… you could try 16bit maps… most of the time you wont need 32bit…

maybe its possible to work with projections and fake something in the post.?
